People are shouting 'homophobia' in California and here in New York because of the marriage fights, and... they're not wrong, but the gay community has come a long way. Civil rights legislation is passing the House, not dying in the streets. Nor is legal marriage the logical culmination of every civil protection one could want, as Sugarbutch writes, though it definitely takes up a lot of the slack.
The detail about the one mentioned female protestor reminds me of Big Al's arrest and beating in Stone Butch Blues, except that was set forty years ago and this was yesterday.
