A Mother's Day Special. Please join us for this very special
Mother's Day appearance by noted author and screenwriter Laura
Esquivel. Author of the much-loved (and tasty) Like Water for
Chocolate, she returns to Seattle from her Mexico City home to read
from her new novel, Malinche (Atria), translated by Ernesto Mestre-
Reed, with both English and the original Spanish editions on
hand. Malinche is a redemptive story about an indigenous woman,
enslaved by Aztec conquerors, who later becomes Cortes' lover and
interpreter. According to some a betrayer of her people and to
others a mediator between cultures, Malinalli is a fascinating and
complex character, vividly presented by Ms. Esquivel.

I plan to be there. My mom's not around for Mother's Day, and I find the Malinche story quite fascinating, and Como agua para chocolate was the first full-length novel I finished in Spanish.

In other news, I am all a-flutter, and cheerfully stirring shit UP. I was a saucy wench today, yes I was. I am, per usual, not getting anything done for beans on anything I'm supposed to be doing, but that's leavened with a sense that it'll be all right anyway so long as the very basics are sorted.
