I am someone's library ghost.
A few months ago I bought Longitude from the U-dist Twice Sold Tales, paperback. Its previous owner had the habit of underlining any word she (it looked like feminine handwriting) apparently didn't understand, and drawing a long arrow with the arrowhead on a short cross-spar to the definition written in the margin. She does this about every third page, often many words per page... I'm charmed to find annotated books, but it was rather distracting, and I meant to take a soft eraser to it.
Now I'm in the third floor of the Engineering stacks looking through a text on probability algorithms. Same underlining style, weird arrows, same handwriting, no joke. There's also scribbling in what looks like Arabic. I wonder if I'll see her again.
