If you have some flexible time available, and you're interested in working directly in the relief effort, you do not necessarily have to go to NOLA in order to help. The Seattle Red Cross chapter is taking volunteers both for local and national deployment. (link to their press release) They stressed that they need local support too, not just people who can take 3 weeks off work to head to the South.
Also, in case you forgot, it's still hurricane season. TS Ophelia is kicking around the east coast of Florida. I sometimes wonder if my old house in Boca Raton is still standing.
