Sunglasses like Scars were suddenly becoming a better idea if it would help with all the snow glare. Al was bundled up just as much, with gloves for good measure, and cutting a path through the snow so it would be easier on Ed's automail to follow.

"We were busy with a lot of things," Al reminded him, cheerfully enough. "Getting ready for winter and all. But finding a place is important too. Maybe by spring we'll be ready to move in."

"Are we digging the cellar separate?" He'd never say he was grateful for Al cutting the path first. As it was he was going to need to strip and put hot packs on the ports once they got home. At the very least it was a blessing he still had the northern automail installed. "Ground's going to be too hard to start digging now."

"It would be hard to dig the cellar after we build the house, but that depends on how we want to do it. It's definitely too hard to dig now, but do we want to wait?"

He tilted his head. He knew full well that Ed wouldn't say anything -- but Al was sure he'd be complaining about Al taking the lead the whole time if he didn't need it.

"Waiting might be a good idea." He didn't want to rush this. With all the chaos that happened in Adstring around them, he didn't want to make a house building just as chaotic. This was something that was special just between him and Al. It would be theirs no matter who lived in that place. It was one of the few things that kept Ed going, these days, and for once, he was going to be pretty selfish about it.

"I had trouble with the water filter system in the early spring when I started that. And while we do the cellar, we can do an underground filter of sorts, then."

"No need to rush," Al agreed, brushing branches aside with a hum.

"There are some places with running water and electricity. Depending on where we want to locate ourselves we could potentially tap into both."

"Then there's pros and cons for that. We'll be closer to everything. And then we'll be closer to everything." The pro was a support system and the con was that Ed would be closer to all that stuff he might not be partial to.

"What do you want to do? Do you want to be closer to everyone?"

"I'd like to be closer to our friends, yes." Al sighed, pausing to look back at him.

"And our house should be a safe place, too."

His eyes came up to meet Al's, half surprised that he doesn't think anymore that they should be more amber than they are. "If you're going to be a spokesperson for this government this guy wants... it wouldn't do good to have you secluded."

"Hitsugaya was also nominated," he reminded him, rubbing the back of his neck.

"... to be perfectly honest I've never wanted any position of power... but if someone has to do it it may as well be me, I guess -- if Hitsugaya doesn't take it up."

"I don't know much about Hitsugaya, but I wouldn't mind if he got it." Of course, he'd be rooting for his brother regardless. As long as it wasn't Nathan or any other uppity person. A spokesperson needed to be level headed, around Adstring for a while, and someone who understood the needs of the people. No matter what Nathan believed, he hadn't been here long enough to understand the needs. He assumed that his own wants were the people's needs and that was mistake number one.

Ed most likely wouldn't trust that man ever, regardless if he changed his ways. He sighed a bit, looking at the direction they were headed for. It was far away from the civilized part of Adstring, so he looks over to Al. "You want to turn around?"

Al stopped, hesitating.

"... yeah, we might have to if we want to be closer to town."

He caught that hesitation and then turned around to follow the same path that was plowed through. "It'd be easier out here with the animals, though. More pasture."

Ed was quiet a moment later and then shoved his hands in his pockets. "Would you be satisfied if he got it and not you?"

"Yeah." He didn't have to think about that answer. Hitsugaya would do well. "I trust him with my life. I've fought beside him more than once. He's a good person."

A smile.

"He just has a temper."

That pulled a laugh from Ed. "Al, compared to you, everyone has a temper!" Also another reason why Ed did not get involved in the politics of this place: he couldn't handle the pressure. How the Colonel managed not to set everyone on fire was beyond him.

"Hey, I get mad sometimes!" But Al was laughing, too. He clapped Ed gently on the back.

"Happy medium, then. Far enough out that we won't be bothered, close enough to things to easily get there for emergencies?"

He turned to smirk at his brother after the clap on his back.

"Happy medium. Probably another quarter mile back towards town?"
