Her birthday had been wonderful. She had more flowers than she almost knew what to do with... almost. And Raven had set it up just at the perfect time for Horst to come to the party. She hadn't expected to enjoy turning eight in Adstringendum but she had. But that had been yesterday. Earlier in the following day the Animus had sent back Trisha and Alphonse and his brother were without their mother. She had done all she could to try and cheer them up but she understood that it hurt. It hurt more than Alice could actually describe even with her extensive vocabulary of made up words and their meanings.
She couldn't stand the pain in the chest. She didn't know what to do with it, how to contend with the idea of being without her own family. Oh, she was aware she was without them now, but when she returned she would see them again. The way Alphonse spoke of it... it hurt in away she couldn't explain. It felt like he would never get to see his mother again if he went home although Alice didn't know the why. Just the way he spoke of her had felt different from just being separated. When people were merely separated they always seemed to say "They're better off at home and I'll see them again eventually," but such words had never left Alphonse's lips.
And that had made Alice scared. It had terrified her and made her stomach churn and her eyes burned from unshed tears that she didn't even know why she had them.
But she wanted to be a good girl for Horst and Johannes and Arthur. So Alice had gone to bed at the proper time as always. Except when night kept ticking along, she couldn't sleep. Her eyes just stared up at the ceiling where soft lit moons and stars circled around because even though she was eight now she was still petrified of the dark. Finally she got up from bed. Her arm clutched Basil to her nightgown-covered chest and Aurora slept on with only a flick of an ear moving in Alice's direction.
Alice was very careful to open the door, unsure about what time it was. She crept out of her room, the cool wooden floor creaking under the pads of her feet.
Like a little sprite in soft white she started to walk down the hallway of the apartment, not entirely sure where she wanted to go.
