Summary: Ever wanted to know what goes on in Snape's brain? Here's your chance to find out! Except... not. Once an Occlumens, always an Occlumens
Upon first arriving in Snape’s mind, visitors will find themselves in a stone dungeon with two doorways: one in front of them, the other behind. However, the minute the visitor notices them, black fire will immediately spring up in the doorway leading forward while purple fire blocks the one leading back. The dreamer will get painfully burned to death if they try to move through the fires and nothing they try will be able to protect them from the flames or put them out. There’s nothing in the room to help in that endeavor either, only a wooden table with seven differently shaped potion bottles standing on it in a line. A scroll rests in front of them, which upon the visitor’s approach will rise into the air and unroll itself to present the riddle neatly inked onto it in Snape’s spiky handwriting:
Knowledge stands before you, while danger lies in wait,
Safety rests in two, to guide you from this strait,
One among us seven will let you move ahead,
Another will transport the drinker back instead,
Two among our numbers hold only nettle wine,
Three of us are killers, waiting hidden in line.
Choose, unless you wish to have no choice,
To help you, we give these four clues voice:
First, however slyly the poison tries to hide
You will always find some on nettle wine’s left side;
Second, different are those who stand at either end,
But if you would move onward, neither is your friend;
Third, as you see clearly, all are different size,
Neither dwarf nor giant holds death in their insides;
Fourth, the second left and the second on the right
Are twins once you taste them, though different at first sight.
It is a simple logic puzzle, Snape’s first unconscious defense, a physical manifestation of his desire that people entering his mind and accessing his memories have some semblance of intelligence. As stated in the riddle, one potion will allow the visitor to move forward through the black flames and onto his thoughts and memories, while another will allow movement back through the purple flames to where safety presumably waits. The other five are fillers, two of which contain harmless wine while the remaining three contain deadly poison.
