Despite the chill of winter, Ukitake made his way carefully into the Wastelands, a hand resting easily on the crimson hilt of Sogyo no Kotowari. He needed to keep his skills up to par, and sometimes a friendly spar just wasn't enough. The techniques could be honed in that situation, yes, but the urgency and risk were nearly non-existent. Some might find his walking blindly into the Wastes a stupid idea, but Ukitake knew he could take care of himself quite well, as long as he kept his wits about him.
The cold, however, made this a little difficult since he would try to focus on himself and his body's discomfort, but he stayed strong and stepped lightly over the sand, looking for a small target with which to start out. Even in the wild, he could have some control if he worked hard enough for it, and being a senior captain usually meant he could do it very well.
Usually.
Ukitake pulled his haori closer together around himself and trekked up over a sand dune, but when he reached the summit, he realized that something really was not right, made all the more clear when the dune began to move. Frowning in slight alarm, the Shinigami flash-stepped to the other side and watched as something slowly unburied itself from the sand. Something very big.
His hand gripped the zanpakutou hilt firmly this time as an adult, blue dragon rose from the ground, rivers of sand pouring away from its body, the slight crackle of electricity making itself apparent along the scales as the creature moved. That sound brought back memories of something Ukitake would rather not experience again and he cringed as the dragon towered above him. He took a step backward, hoping the dragon would take that as a sign of retreat, but when he looked at the dragon's legs, he saw two smaller versions. Babies.
Ukitake had gotten in over his head this time. There was no way the mother would just let him leave after trespassing on the nest. Quickly, he took a deep breath and flared his reiatsu for a moment, hoping that someone would be nearby and feel his unspoken plea for help.
