Summary: Shirou-chan powers activate: Form of an awkward confession. Shape of well meaning advice.
Hitsugaya was less than thrilled, perhaps even a little anxious. He shouldn't have been, not really. He'd weighed the pros and cons of such a conversation more than once before, had already long decided that Ukitake-taichou was the only one he could trust with such a conversation. He'd even convinced himself that it really wasn't anything too unnatural despite his feeling so uncomfortable with the topic at hand. But the fact still remained that he'd never talked about such a thing before. He'd gotten close with Matsumoto a few times, but they had always discussed her feelings. Not his.
It felt wholy and completely ridiculous that he - a proud and capable captain of the Gotei 13 - would participate in something so childish, so ... middle school girl-ish. But he had to get it over with; he had to say something. It was beginning to overtake his focus, to drag him down and keep hold of his attention when he should be dealing with much more important things (but they weren't more important, even though they should have been, that was the problem). Every fight he had with the shinobi raked at him, every look of guilt or mourning, every time he chose someone else over him... Hitsugaya was sure it was affecting his judgement now. There was no question. The problem was what he needed to do about it.
That was where Ukitake-taichou came in. Ukitake and no one else. He took a deep breath, in and out, before rapping lightly at the door, his expression schooled into a neutral mask. This had to stop feeling so ridiculous at some point.
...Right?
