Friday Evening Part One adstring_npc August 21 2009, 15:49:42 UTC
Bao's group had split up to examine the fence as best they could. She remained with Patrick and one marksman as they semi-efficiently shut off a portion of the fence, re-wired it, and turned it back on. This would be a project too big for one day of work, but at least it was started. They could return later when opportunity allowed.

Unohana had felt the alien energies moving around. It really did seem like Colonel Bao was out and about and making good on her offer. That spoke in favor of the woman.

The shinigami flash-stepped to about two hundred meters of where she had detected them, and walked the rest of the way. They were probably armed, and there was no need to provoke an accident by surprising them. She did have Minazuki with her, though. Her zanpakutou did not leave her, in times such as these.

"Good evening, Colonel Bao."

Bao turned, her hands out, palm-down. There were no guns raised, the men knew she'd spoken to Unohana before. They stood, if not relaxed, not entirely tense, either, for a moment. Finally they returned to working on the fence at Bao's nod.

"Good evening, Miss Unohana. I'm glad you've made it out here. How have things been fairing among the O-- people outside?" That was a change that was going to take time, but Bao would work on it. Her men were as well. She just wished there was an better title to use instead.

Unohana looked sad for a second, shaking her head with a small smile.

"As usual, Colonel. As soon as there is joy, murder and blood are following in its wake. And as soon as death strikes, something happens that gives us hope again."

She turned to the several men and women working on the fence and bowed to them.

"Thank you for coming to our aid in our time of need. Your help is greatly appreciated."

She'd seen the darker turn of things outside, but had been assured by the scientists that this was regular. Apparently they were telling the truth this time.

"It's the cycle of things. But the current event offers relief in some ways." There was a little amusement in her eyes for a moment. She liked seeing the frustration of some of her bosses.

Patrick stepped forward, watching Unohana. "Cosgrave." His nod was a bit more confident than it had been this morning.

The Filipino marksman waved before going right back to his section of the fence. "Juan Dela Cruz. Good to meet you."

Unohana's eyes widened slightly at Patrick. She could recognize the face from the video feed she had had in her possession.

The bow in his direction was more pronounced. The shinigami did not looks up as she said her next words.

"I have tried, on several occasions, to stop Mello-san from rash actions. I unfortunately failed on occasion, and this has caused you much pain. I am deeply sorry for this."

"Yeah?" It was a little hard, being out where he'd been taken captive and killed, and he was still convinced that more than Mello had been there. But he couldn't be rude. She was bowing to him. Patrick felt very awkward, glancing sidelong at the Colonel before giving a clunky bow back.

But he couldn't resist one comment. "Next time, break his legs."

Bao shot him a sharp look. He was out here to heal, to get over the fear that had been starting to get at him. Not to cause incidents. "Enough."

She turned back to Unohana. "It's becoming apparent that this task is far larger than I thought, even with all I was told after asking for suggestions. And I know that my every move, so far as they can, is being watched by the scientists. Right now, it serves their goals, whatever they are, to let us help. That may change, and I don't know how much warning I'll get."

If Patrick's comment disturbed Unohana, it was only visible in the slightly disappointed look she threw his way before focusing on the Colonel again.

"Of course, you are most certainly being monitored, and I thank you for having taken that risk. And indeed, the whole city is pretty much in ruins. We have enough work keeping our own buildings in shape to bother about reconstructing ... and the landscape seems to change on us every once in a while."

They were putting their lives on the line for a bet. Humans, all of them, putting themselves at stake for strangers. Maybe there was hope yet in the Inner City.

"We will work with you as much as we ware able to, Colonel, but just like you, we have very little warning when anything happens."

They seemed to be done here, for now.

"Shall I escort you to wherever you are headed next ?"

He saw it, but he couldn't help it. There was a lot of resentment built up in him over what had happened. He'd been kidnapped and killed, and people hadn't gone to help the Colonel, they'd talked about wanting to attack her. With the fading of his fear return his anger.

"What I don't understand..." Bao's voice faded as she looked around the city. "The inner city is intact. But everything out here is in such a state of destruction. The buildings do not match, the roads do not line up."

Bao nodded. They were taking risks as well, though theoretically they had more to gain than she did.

"Of course. And we will do the same."

Bao glanced at her watch. "Yes, if you did not mind. There is one other location that seems to be seriously unsound on the fence; the rest of my men are there. And then we were asked to see the water tower, and aid in its construction if possible. That will be our last task today."

Unohana nodded.

"I can do that. Monsters tend to go through the fence in weak points. I am sure you do not want to waste ammunitions on them."

She looked at the men and women, all professional and ready for anything. That they could think of.

"Ladies, Gentlemen, I'm following you."

Bao nodded, though it wasn't her men and her ammunition this was meant to save. They were not going to be out here too long.

"We took careful note of a few weak spots so as to make our task easier."

With a gesture of her hand, Bao signaled for Mvumba and Juan to take the lead. "This way, if you will."
