"Roy!" Maes headed over, oblivious to the fact taht he was disturbing Roy's rest. Or perhaps very aware of it and deciding that he could get away with it. "Roy, how's the dating life going?"
Reply
"Hughes." He responded sweetly, about to stand to his feet when halfway there Maes spoke, and he frowned up at the taller man, slumping back down onto the bench. "Excuse me?"
Reply
He plopped down to the bench and set down the box. "You and Miss Hawkeye. You two aren't together yet. It's time for help from Daddy Cupid! Now, there's a chance you're not together yet because you don't know how to treat women quite right!"

Giving him a sidelong look as he sat, he listened only for a moment, eye twitching slightly at the mention of Hawkeye. A moment later his hand was against his face, eyes closing behind it.
"Hughes. You put me, and the Lieutenant in the same sentence in such a way again, and I swear - ash will start to look good on you."
Reply
"Roy! You two would. And that's a full stop, so now we're on a different sentence! Be wonderful together! Now would you really set your best friend on fire just because he's trying to help you? That wouldn't be nice!"
Reply
"Will you just listen to what you're saying, Hughes? Lieutenant Hawkeye." He paused, and gave Maes his most alarmed look. He didn't like to make it obvious that he was possibly more irritated about the breach of topic than usual, but Maes was being ridiculous.
"If you say a word of this to her, a word Hughes, and yes, I would set my best friend on fire."
That ought to do it.
Reply
"Yes. Miss Hawkeye. The one you've been eyeing for FOREVER, who has been eyeing you back, but both of you are too stiff-necked to do anything! And now you're here! Here, where rank doesn't matter. And besides. If it did matter, I outrank you!" Roy had gone on and on about his promotion. Maes very well could do the same.
"All right. I won't say a word to her. I don't have to." Maes winked. He had an ally Roy would never suspect. He didn't need to talk to Miss Riza. "So you can't set me on fire!"
Reply
"Rank always matters, Hughes. Are you insane? We may be in Adstringendum now, but what about when we leave? Any weakness, any weakness could be fatal."
His breath was heavy when he sighed, looking at Maes like he was crazy at his further comments.
"... Good. As much as it would hurt me to set you on fire, I would have to."
Reply
"You won't remember, when we get home. We won't remember anything from here! People who have returned confirm this. They just go back to their normal lives. So! This is seperate! We don't have to worry about what we do here affecting what we do home! Talk to Miss Hawkeye!"
Maes laughed.
"It would hurt me even more, you know. That wouldn't be nice. Then I'd have to chase after you, a human torch, and tackle you. And then where would you be?"
Reply
"I'm not talking to her, Maes. Can you imagine how awkward that would be? Everything we've been through, everything we are - she's my First Lieutenant. It just wouldn't work."
He huffed then, visibly slumped and folded his arms, turning his head from the man.
"Thrust Elysia in your arms."
Reply
"Roy, Roy, Roy. You know that's not true." He pointed at Roy and jabbed a finger in his best friend's direction. "You're just letting your fear of failure hold you back! How can the future Fuhrer of Amestris be so afraid? That's not like you! Now, the first step is flowers! You should bring her--"
Maes stopped talking when Roy threatened Elysia. Sure, it was teasing, but still. He snapped one of the knives from his sleeves down into his palm and held it teasingly in front of Roy's nose.
"What was that about my bundle of perfection?"
Reply
"Oh please, I hoped it would shut you up."
He muttered softly and contemplated moving away, if this was all Maes was going to rabbit on about.
"I don't think she'll be quite as accepting of the circumstances and you seem to think we should be."
Reply
"You know I've wanted you to be happy for a long time. Now there's a chance for the both of you without rank or agenda getting in the way. And really?"
Tilting his head, Maes smiled.
"You must not have been reading her responses to things from the point of view of an onlooker. I think she'd be very accepting. And what's the worst that can happen? She says no? It's worth trying, Roy."
Reply
"... Reading her responses? Hawkeye has been my First Lieutenant in every way, and nothing more..."
Obviously, he was giving the prospect some thought.
"Flowers, huh?" There was a soft chuckle, before he pressed his hands into his face.
