Summary: Some memories fade with time, but they're always there to remind you when you least expect it, while some are meant to be kept secret- left untold and never shown.
The surrounding blackness is suffocating.
Engulfed in nothingness, it weighs in on your chest and breathing becomes just a little more difficult. You know you’re not blind, you can see yourself if you care to look- wave a hand in front of your face- but what’s even more disturbing is the lack of visible support. No floor, but you can walk, so take a few steps now, feel your way through. With no visible destination, your only comfort is the weight and closeness of whatever’s holding you.
The dark is almost tangible. It’s ‘soft’ if air can be called that, like the finest silk or velvet, and hands padding through as you walk an undefined amount of time, trying to feel or ‘part’ the veil, there’s something white a few feet in front of you, level with your toes. A bird of some sort, a dove, maybe, has its head cocked to the side- surprisingly clear and sharp in appearance despite the setting- and stares up at you with one imperious and critical eye. Feathers and wings shift on its tiny back and the small head tilts to the other side as though considering you.
Make a move to startle it, and it’ll take off and lead you astray, but stand still long enough or crouch down to its level, and it’ll take flight above your head, hovering for a second before shooting off in a far direction. Run after it or ignore it seem to be your only options, and nothing else is around. Surely it has some destination in mind and is somewhat familiar with this place?
Your feet don’t make any sounds. It makes a form of twisted sense as there is obviously no floor to keep you level, but you aren’t tired or fatigued, either. You could run all day-or night- if you so chose even with the suffocating feeling.
But reliably, the bird does lead you somewhere, though it didn’t seem it at first. Like watching a broken mirror in reverse to fix itself, large shards of something fly out of nowhere and collide and crash together, forming a small sort of ‘landing’. The dove is used to this and settles down again on the floor, ruffling and preening its feathers importantly.
This new place is white and full of glass with a floor that is very nearly a thin sort of transparent gray. Delicate, fragile: a pristine setting with tall white walls and no ceiling. If not for that, maybe it could have passed for a house. This time, your footsteps have sound. The weighed feeling on your chest hasn’t disappeared, but already the area feels more open and solid. You’re not enclosed in a dark blanket any longer.
To your left, there’s a long hallway, aligned with many doors from what you can see, and to your right stands a large glass paneled window. Behind you is the same way you came- except that now there’s an edge to fall off of- and in front, the dove sits on top of a gilded cage.
Different emotions emanate from that long hallway, concealed by identical doors, and your heart pounds in time with a nameless beat.
The rest is up to you.
