The old man with the long beard sitting in the chair in the middle struck the floor with what looked like a cane. On each side, Captains in their white haoris were standing.

Unohana was on the left, between a tall woman with dark skin and an older man wearing a pure white scarf. Her hair was not braided, but gathered in a sort of ponytail, still in front instead of in the back.

"This is urgent," the old man proclaimed, and everyone jumped to attention. "According to the report from Squad Nine's standby camp ont he front line, the reiatsu of both their captain, Muguruma Kensei, and their vice-captain, Kuna Mashiro, who were on night watch, have vanished. The cause is unknown. This is one of the worst situation imaginable. This matter does not simply concern Rukongai anymore. It must be resolved to uphold the pride of the Gotei 13. Therefore, I will now handpick members of the captain class to go to the scene immediately."

Someone suddenly rushed past Joutarou, bumping him out of the way but not stopping. Another man with a black kimono and a white haori bearin the number 12 on his back. He was out of breath.

"You're late, Urahara Kisuke," the old man chided.

"Please ... let me go !" the newcomer asked while gasping for breath. The other captains, including Unohana, turned to look at him, and the old man shook his head.

"I will not."

"My lieutnant is heading there right now ! I've ..."

"Kisuke !" That came from the dark-skinned woman next to Unohana. "Don't lose your composure like that ! It's pathetic ! You chose her and sent her, didn't you ? Your behavior is an insult to her ! Can't you see that ?"

The man looked beaten, and put himself in the line with the others, looking down.

"Moving on," the old man said. "Captain of the Third Division Outoribashi Roojurou, Captain of the Fifth Squad Hirako Shinji, Captain of the Seventh Squad Aikawa Love ! You will head to the scene right away. Captain of the Second Division Shihouin Yoruichi," the dark-skinned woman nodded, "You will be on standby pending different orders. Captain of the Sixth Division Kuchiki Genrei, Captain of the Eighth Division Kyouraku Shunsui, Captain of the Thirteenth Division Ukitake Juushirou, you will defend Sereitei."

The old man finally turned to Unohana.

"Captain of the Fourth Division Unohana Retsu, you are to stand by at the general relief station and prepare for incoming casualties."

She was the only one to speak up.

"Please wait a moment, Commander. If we are speaking of treating the wounded, would it not be better if I headed out to the scene ?"

"As long as the situation is unknown, I cannot send out the head of medical treatment," the old man answered, as the scene finally faded from view.

Not something as personal this time, at least, though it was still a memory he was watching uninvited. It wasn't like him to surrender to his curiosity like this, Jotaro thought, without minimal restraint... but this was Unohana. Not just because of who, but also because of what she was it was hard to look away. All these men and women he'd seen, were they all like her - death gods?

He thought back to another mind he'd visited unwillingly as he took a hesitant step into the room, not sure what he thought to find in there. There as well as here, for all their obvious power, they still looked, seemed, spoke as though they were human - in the times he'd seen them, at least. Perhaps when they weren't, it was simply beyond his mind to grasp.

He lingered in the room.

The two rows of people reappeared, but the line-up had changed up slightly. The old man was still presiding, but quite a few of the captains had changed. Unohana's hairstyle was now identical to the one she was sporting in adtsringendum.

The dark-skinned woman was gone, her place taken by a fair-skinned girl with slanted eyes. On Unohana's other side, the older man was gone, replaced by a dark-haired man wearing exactly the same scarf. Next to him was the captain called Kyouraku Shunsui, then a kid with a shock of white hair and a look of boredome on his face. The last one on this side was Kurotsuchi Mayuri, bearing a haori with the number 12.

On the other side, the line had changed quite a lot too. There was an empty space first, then a man with glasses and brown hair wearin glasses and the number five, a masked giant bearin the number seven, a dark-skinned man with blind eyes bearin the number nine, and Zaraki Kempachi Kenpachi with the number eleven. Another spot was empty next to him.

Again, another man wearing a white haori, this time with the number three in his back, stepped up next to Joutarou, but did not seem to notice him. His hair was white, and his face was grinning, but not in any way that made him look nice and friendly.

"We require explanations about your behavior, Third Division Captain Ichimaru Gin," the old man said.

"Heh ? I get called here fer an emergency meeting, and y'all are lookin' like someone died. Ya mean ev'ryone gathered here fer lil' old me ? Ah, not ev'ryone ... Where's the captain of the Thirteenth ?"

"He is very ill," the blind man said.

"Again ? Poor thing."

"Are ya playin' with us ?" Zaraki boomed. "Didn't get called here for socializin'. You went an dplayed with a Ryoka, didn' ya ? And ya didn't even kill'em. You wanna make us believce someone like ya can't even kill five or six Ryoka ?"

"Ooops, he wasn't dead ?" the white-haired man said. "Damn, coulda sworn he was. Must be gettin' rusty."

"Stop fooling around," Mayuri interrupted. "It would be unbelievable for a captain-class shinigami to mistake the amount of reiatsu coming from the body. Unless your abilities have declined so much that your are incapable of it."

The white-haired kid rolled his eyes and crossed his arms. "And there you go. Why do old people fight all the time ?"

There as some more squabbling, Unohana watching in silence, until the old man hit the floor with his cane and interrupted with a loud "Enough !"

He was about to deliver a sentence when an alarm bell rang, and the captains all but scattered, the memory fading again, leavin the meeting room empty with only a gigantic kanji for one in a black losange behind the old man's chair.

Enough, enough. It was more than fascinating, it was fantastic and perverse, and he couldn't keep with it - watching her, seeing her past and her secrets. Jotaro took a step back, then another - not turning around, but definitely on his way out of the room.

He needed to regain control.

Finally he turned, leaving the room behind him - it was an effort, but a worthwhile one. He walked down the corridor. No more rooms, and perhaps he'll forget it all when he woke up.

Perhaps.

((OOC: >_< It's really interesting but he's determined not to look anymore... so unless he somehow runs across living quarters Uno he'll be trying to leave now.))
