Dreams. Always strange, always different.

Oliver had hated sleeping because of dreams. This week wasn't really helping, but it did a little, maybe. Maybe.

Thumbs hooked in the waistband of the pants he wore (and nothing else, at the moment), he looked around the courtyard and settled on going, for the time being, to the right. Bare feet padding almost silently, tail swishing a bit and ear perked for any sign of the trouble he'd been finding elsewhere, he slipped into the living quarters, wondering if there would be a face he knew.

Night fell as he went deeper into the livin quarters, and the sound of a shamisen could be heard in the distance.

Unohana as sitting on a wood porch, kneeling on a cushion, a low table ith to cups and teapot on it at her side, and her sword on the floor on her other side. Her hair was loosely braided, in her back for once,, and the she wore a simple white yukata.

She was strumming at the instrument almost distractedly, and smiled as Oliver appeared.

"Welcome, Ollie-kun."

Following music was on par for the catboy, and when he came up to the wooden porch, he stopped well back, just listening to her play. She'd mentioned it, of course, but he was all but unfamiliar with the strange instrument (this time around?), and the music was as haunting as lovely. A tiny hint of blush appearaing in his cheeks, he stepped forward.

"Hallu," he said softly. His eyes glanced around the room quickly. "What's this place, then?"

"Well, this is where I live, Ollie-kun. The 4th Division's Hedquarters in Sereitei."

There was an inviting cushion not far from her, and she put down the shamisen to pour tea in the two cups. The setting looked traditionally Japanese, but the secnt of the tea itself was unmistakable : Earl Grey.

She patted the cushion and held out the teacup to him.

Oliver dropped on the cushion, bouncing a little, and looking comfortable in a very Western kind of way, as thought it was clear he didn't really belong on a cushion, but had learned how to use one, anyway. He accepted the cup but didn't take a drink right away. It was comfort enough, the warmth in his hands.

"4th Division? Sounds like some kind of military thing, really. I mean, yeah, the sword, but you don't strike me as a soldier, Unohana."

Unohana took her own cup to sip at it, shamisen momentarily forgotten. She looked up at the moon and sighed happily ( ... )

Oliver listened to the titles and explanations, ear perked forward and eyes lowered. He glanced up when she lifted the sword, his stomach twisting up in a knot. He'd never really imagined her to be dangerous like that, really, but she had that feeling for a moment, even while dismissing hunting humans. It was almost chilling, but the kindness and compassion behind that came through, still, and so he didn't tense or move away from her. He managed to even sip his tea, calmly.

When the other woman appeared, he made no move to leave or even stand, merely regarded her passively. He inclined his head when she stepped forward and bowed, but he didn't really bow back. He wasn't wearing his collar, anymore.

He watched her disappear, and then turned to look at Unohana again. "'Taichou'?"

"My official military rank," Unohana explained, putting Minazuki away. "I suppose you could translate it as captain or commander. Isane is my lieutenant, or fukutaichou. She is second in command."

Unohana put down her tea cup and picked up the shamisen again, tuning it absentmindedly.

"Did you have trouble sleeping, Ollie-kun ?"

"Always do, actually. But it's okay. I know how to handle myself without much sleep. Mistress sometimes wouldn't let me sleep at all, but I never did fail her and fall asleep. She didn't expect that. Wyatt did, you see. Fall asleep on her. He didn't mean to, but it happened."

A sip of tea, as though he was talking about a school class or something equally unimportant in the grand scheme of things, and as emotional. He even chuckled softly.

"She looked nice. The other lady, I mean."

"Sleep is a fickle thing," Unohana remarked softly as she finished tuning the instrument. She picke dup her plectum and strummed a few sharp notes into the night sky.

She smiled when he mentioned Isane.

"She is very nice. She tends to worry too much, though."

She started to play, the tune strange and jumpy to unaccustomed ears.

"This week en't been so horrible, though. Strange dreams, but no nightmares." He smiled and settled a little on his cushion as she played with the instrument, his eyes following her movements.

"Lotsa people tend to, though, dun they?"

He sipped the tea, and waited while she played, eyes watching the fingering more than the picking. It was always the fingering that took the time to learn, the hours and hours of practice. He even leaned forward to watch.

When she finished, he carefully sat the teacup down and then applauded a few times.

"You're very good." Of course, he didn't have a thing to compare her to, to be fair, but he still enjoyed her playing.

Unohana smiled and shook her head.

"I haven't played in a very long while. Time has been lacking. Although ... I did say I would teach you, Ollie-kun, if you wished to learn."

She took her teacup and drained it, rearranging her heavy brain on her shoulder as she did.

He sat his cup down, not really thirsty. It was still more than two-thirds full. "You've mentioned that, yes. I think I'd probably enjoy it. Something I never would learn, back home."

She held out her hand to touch his cheek in the way she had, back in the Clinic after gathering the feathers from a pillows.

"It will be my pleasure, Ollie-kun."

He tipped his head into the touch, eyes half closed as he rubbed against her hand.

Unohana giggled as he did, a more carefree kind of sound that he'd probably never heard her come out with before.

"I'm looking forward to it, Ollie-kun. Very much. Now ... would you like me to play some more ?"
