Kobato liked it. Colorful, sweet... She found it a comfortable place at first. It took her some steps around to realize something was off. It was all beautiful and bright, but there was nothing alive in there.
"Hello?" she called.
"Ioryogi-san?" no answer.
Then she realized there was movement behind her. When she turned back, she could see those strange eyes staring at her, and she stared back at them. Kobato didn't find them scary, she found them lonely.
He tilted his head, rotated it till it was upside down and pressed his face out from between the bright items. His mouth hung open a little in surprise and when he exhaled it echoed through this whole world.
Aside from calm breathing he made no noise. No, he waited.
The girl smelled sweet and he liked sweetness. Curiously he pushed his arms out in the open, a sharp contrast to the bright items as his skin was covered in dirt, and the little hands dripping with something the color of blood. For a moment he was fascinated by this distraction, then he concentrated back on the girl.
He tried to grab her hand, waving his arms up and down, almost falling out of his lair.
The boy was covered in something Kobato recognized as blood. She had seen too much of that in Adstringendum, especially when she helped Cloche clean her new home.
"Are you hurt?"
She saw the movement on his arm and she thought he was about to fall, so she stepped quickly towards him to hold him in her arms.

The child cried out sharply, a high, eardrum-ripping sound, and then it vanished. The other children in the room all inhaled at the very same second. Never had someone dared to touch them; never until tonight, and now one of them was lost.
Surprised whispers could be heard through the world which was still as gaudy as before.
Kobato was in shock when the little kid disappeared. Did she make him go away? Was it her fault?
"I'm sorry... I didn't... I didn't want to..."
She looked around, looking for him in case he had just teleported, but he had vanished.
Kobato fell to her knees and covered her ears from the sound the other children made. She felt as though she had killed that child, just because she wanted to help him, to embrace him so that he wouldn't fall.

One after the other, the children crawled back inside their lairs until not even their eyes could be seen anymore. Only one child stayed. He sat next the place where his brother had been sitting a few minutes ago.
The rustling of the other children crawling became quieter, then the world was void of noise again.
The kid left to stare at Kobato opened his mouth and said, "Young girl." A sound less of a child's voice than a woman's.
The kid pushed the glowing things that hid him aside and stepped in the open. Unlike the other child he didn't have a single stain on him and was dressed in a very black, very long dress. His arms were invisible beneath the laced sleeves.
"Brother." He shook his head, not giving her a clue if he meant that no, he didn't know or no, they couldn't make him come back.
Never had someone entered their realm after their parents had left them alone. How the girl had managed to get in here was a wonder -- even more of a wonder was that she could obviously understand his language though no one was supposed to do.
The kid put a hand over his mouth. "Oh." His eyes glistened; if he was right about the girl and could lead her the right way, father and mother would treat him well.
"Follow." He pointed at the entrance to his lair. Then he hissed sharply, "dare touch me once and you shall wail."
The child's expressions were carved into the small face. He could not remember making a different face, but he knew humans liked smiles. And he tried, he really did. While the soul's body he was resident of was a good actor, he wasn't one at all and it showed.
With a strange grimace distorting his face he walked over to the entrance. "Follow."
Kobato wasn't one to mind physical appearance at all, or how unnatural his smile was. The fact he was trying to smile was enough for her, even though she was probably getting his intention wrong.
She followed him, careful not to touch him like she had done with the previous kid. She was determined to try her best there, wherever there was.
Inside the lair it was hot and too dark to see anything. The walls and the ground was wet and not being able to see what exactly it was, it might have been anything from blood to tears or pus. The only indication was a salty scent in the air.
The child walked farther into the lair, cooing all the while to soothe his brothers and help Kobato to know where he went.
"Hello?" she called.
"Ioryogi-san?" no answer.
Then she realized there was movement behind her. When she turned back, she could see those strange eyes staring at her, and she stared back at them. Kobato didn't find them scary, she found them lonely.
"Hello, are you here alone?"

She tilted her head when she heard him say yes. Maybe there was a way for her to help solve what she just started.
"What can I do? Tell me... I want to help him."
