Although Lee had been growing into a suitably fine young man, Gai could not fight the fit of empty-nest syndrome he was succumbing to since he'd arrived at this odd place, where Lee seemed to be quite busy with a rigorous training schedule -- not that the sensei had minded, as he took great pride in Lee's dedication. At least, he was pretty sure that had been preoccupying his precious student's time, though it could have been something else. It was a bit of a change for Gai, who was used to being joined at the hip with Rock Lee. Codependent? Never!

However, this bout of loneliness had allowed Gai to zone in on his more ... difficult student. Without Tenten here to mediate the team's passionate energies, Gai had wondered if Neji would feel alienated upon his sensei's arrival; he'd certainly hoped that Neji would not think he and Lee would only focus on one another, and leave him to just sweep up the house like a lonely housewife! Though he most definitely would not suffocate his student, either. He knew the genius needed his space. Which is why he took it upon himself to stalk his student's tracks. Of course, he'd waited a while before he followed, and to his pleasant surprise it turned out that Neji was visiting a decor shop.

An amused look had slowly crawled its way to Gai's features as he pressed his back against the side of the building, looking quickly through the window to see his student's back turned to him. He seemed to be winnowing through various dining materials, though Gai could not tell what exactly he was looking at.

It was more than enough to warm the cockles of his heart! How splendid of his student ... he must have a great eye for detail, and as stoic as he appeared, there was something so regal and graceful about Neji. The way he liked to colour coordinate, the cleanly order he kept in his house, and so on and so forth. Neji had the makings of a shinobi's dream woman. Except he was secretly a grumpy old man, trapped in a youthful body.

Now was a good time to sneak up on him, Gai had thought. Such a thing was hard to refrain from, as the allure of any form of bonding, even with an impossible individual such as his student, was positively irresistible for the dark-haired man. For all of their differences, he adored his student.

Which was why he wanted to sneak up on him in the perfect manner.

However, almost immediately after stepping into the store, his elbow knocked a souvenir vase off of its stand.

"...Oops."
