Years later, Rowan makes an appearance at the hospital and all but sets Chase on edge. He says he's in town for a conference and Chase spends the majority of the time irritated with his father. Rowan confides in House that he has terminal lung cancer, but leaves before telling Chase and even turns down his offer to grab a drink together. The incident creates yet another speed bump in their already deteriorating relationship. That would be the last time Chase ever saw his father.

When Vogler begins to pressure House to fire someone, the team's self preservation instincts kick in and Chase starts to offer information to Vogler from the inside. House does his best to procrastinate having to choose by supporting Vogler's new drug. It doesn't take long for it to come out that Chase was acting the part of the mole and Chase, in an exhibit of smugness, decides to be haughty about it. Once Vogler leaves, House retaliates by making Chase's life miserable.

Near the beginning of the second season, Chase and Cameron have an encounter while she's high on Meth and while they both seem to enjoy it, Cameron later expresses regret for it. Chase mentions that the sex was good, but they should probably refrain from giving it another go because of that. The encounter does, however, mark the start of his feelings for her and he finds himself being more aware and observant of her.

A few episodes later, Chase receives a call from his stepmother telling him his father has died from lung cancer. Chase, obviously and understandably shaken by the news, neglects to ask a patient some very key questions and it results in the loss of her life. Instead of explaining the situation when the threat of a lawsuit is looming, Chase opts to lie and try to cover it up. It takes House to drag the truth from him and House admits that he knew of Rowan's cancer much to Chase's displeasure. The incident results in a week of suspension for Chase and a month of supervision for House since his record is so cluttered.

With his father dead and having been removed from his will, Chase is thrown into the unfamiliar position of actually having to worry about money and he has to work during his vacation time just to earn enough money to support himself.
