Personality: First of all, Chase is a walking, talking example of a Catch-22. With him, you're damned if you do and damned if you don't. Show too much interest in him and you're branded suspicious; too little and there's obviously something wrong with him. Used to being treated as the pompous rich kid, he finds himself bewildered when that isn't the case.
Given his upbringing, the way in which Chase strives for approval is almost on an instinctual level. So long as his sense of morals aren't too heavily damaged, he's content to put those he considers his superiors on a pedestal and follow their dictations. This has, however, lessened with time, but he's still prone to it when faced with aggressive people.
Behind that charming and disarming smile of his, Chase is prone to exhibiting prejudice against those who are overweight and people who are addicts. He isn't shy when it comes to his feelings pertaining to either case and is often unsympathetic to their plights. This most likely stems primarily from watching his alcoholic mother waste away without his father's presence. As a teenager in the situation, it left him with a bitter taste in his mouth. Thus, adults who choose not to care for themselves have a negative effect on him.
As cold and calculating as Chase would like to be, his emotions often get in the way of both his job and his personal life. When faced with his father's death, he neglects a patient and she loses her life because of it. Instead of explaining the situation, he attempts to lie. When it comes to dealing with his own problems, he'll go through hell and high water to avoid them. His past is something he'll only talk about when heavily pressured.
Chase's sentimental side comes to the surface most often when he deals with children. He's gentle, reassuring, and all but caters to their wishes and whims. Again, this may be due to his past or it could be due to deeper maternal instincts that cause him to want to protect them and alleviate their pain because he sees them as innocents.
As a skeptical romantic at heart, Chase often spouts awful pick up lines when presented with someone he finds attractive. He's extremely laid back when it comes to the idea of casual sex, but his sentimental side prevents him from keeping it truly casual. Having been denied familial affection when he was growing up, Chase has issues with believing he's even capable of being loved. It certainly isn't something he'll openly admit, though. Combined with being unwilling to trust most people and let them actually know him on a deeper level, it sets the stage for disaster in his personal life. He likes the assertive type. It's even mentioned at one point that Chase has participated in a type of BDSM with a partner because it was what she was into.
Chase's eagerness to hope often lands him in tight spots whether he wants to own up to it or not. He has a tendency to grab for faith and when placed between a rock and a hard place, it's possible to catch him desperately reaching for the comfort prayer can bring. When presented with something that appeals to that side of him, he'll fight you tooth and nail, shooting down every possibility you could present him with, but he'll remember it and will even take it to heart if you're assertive enough. When it comes down to it, he'd like to believe in something, he's just been burned a few times and is a bit gun shy.
