By the time she was promoted to Vice-Captain of the 10th Division, she was already well-known for her drinking habits, laziness, and her two greatest assets - her breasts. Yet in the end, Rangiku turned out to be a reliable and loyal subordinate, if you knew how to work with her. It was a little surprising when her new Captain ended up being a boy she had met in Rukongai years ago, and who was still very much a child. But Hitsugaya Toushirou was just too cute when he got all serious, and Rangiku quickly developed a sisterly, or almost motherly affection for the boy. However, that did not stop her from shoving his face between her breasts and running away from paperwork and deadlines.
When the Ryoka entered Seireitei to save Rukia, Rangiku didn't pay it much mind at first. But when the go was given for Officers to carry their Zanpakutou with them, she got worried. Having to stop a fight between Hinamori and Kira after Aizen's death left an impression, but more so was the letter she delivered to Hinamori in jail. She didn't know what it said, but a dead man's words unnerved her. It was her Captain that really began to suspect her childhood friend and now Third Division Captain, Ichimaru Gin. Rangiku wrote it off at first, for no one really seemed to like him but her and Kira, the latter being sometimes a little more afraid than friendly on occasions. But it was when Rangiku had to break into a fight between her Captain and Gin, stop Gin's blade from killing Hinamori that things changed for her. Gin left as he was known to do, yet Rangiku could not shake it from her mind.
It was Hitsugaya that decided they had to investigate Chamber 46 with Rukia's constantly changing execution date. Carrying suspicions with them, Rangiku followed her Captain to the chamber, which was much too easy to get into. What they discovered was a massacre, every member left dead in their seats and on the floor. And there was Kira, who disappeared as quickly as he had entered. They both perused to chase him away from the Chamber, Hitsugaya leaving Rangiku to continue pursuit as he returned. Kira stopped and engaged her in battle, showing her the true power of his sword. Yet Rangiku's shikai was just the bane to his own Zanpakutou, yet it was all a distraction.
Aizen was revealed alive and well, and not the man they knew. Leaving with the Hyougoku from Rukia's body, and his long-time subordinates Gin and Tousen, he departed to Hueco Mundo where he stayed. Rangiku watched the one constant factor in her life leave with the new enemy of Soul Society, making Gin an enemy too. Confused, betrayed, and depressed, she returned to her own room to brood, and later to drink it off with Kira and Hisagi, who lost their Captains to the betrayal and thus, shared a mutual hurt.
Months later, she ventured down to earth with her Captain, Ikkaku, Renji, and Yumichika. Posing as students at Ichigo's High School, they kept an eye on the Arrancar and Hollow activity on Earth, anticipating Aizen's move if they could. Rangiku was able to stay with Orihime, acting as a big sister to the distraught girl. Hitsugaya often slept on the roof, refusing to become involved in their antics.
