BESTIARY: SAFEZONE

→ BESTIARY: SAFEZONE

There are many critters that run around Adstring, and they should be noted! If you would like to add something to the bestiary, please reply to this entry in a comment using the form. If there is something you'd like to keep "unknown" for now, simply put that in the section.

Creatures too closely resembling humans (either in behavior/thoughts or in appearance) may not be accepted. If it could, potentially, be a playable character, it is not for the bestiary.

For the sake of other players' reference, since pictures are always helpful, please make a 100x100 icon for it with no border if possible. Spore's Trial Version is a good way to create creatures, if it suits your fancy.

→ B

Name: Boggart
Classification: Magical Creature
Physical Characteristics: A boggart is a shapeshifter, one that transforms into whatever the person who has discovered it fears the most. Because of this, no one knows a boggart's true form.
Diet: Unknown, but they are affiliated with 'fear'.
Habitat: They prefer cupboards, closets, and dark spaces.
Lifespan: Unknown.
Additional Information: It is possible to defeat a boggart by using the magical spell 'Riddikulus!', which causes the boggart to shift shape into something humorous. Since laughter is the key to destroying it, performing the spell enough times will cause the boggart to explode into smoke.

→ C

Name: Coconut Crab
Classification: Crustaceans
Physical Characteristics: The average body length is 16 inches (40 cm) and a leg span of more than 3 feet (.91 m) and a weight of 9 pounds (4.1 kg). May grow larger due to the environment. It can be divided into a front section, with ten legs, and an abdomen. The front-most pair of legs have large claws strong enough to open a coconut.
Diet: Omnivore. Mostly coconuts or other fruit, but it will also eat laves, rotten fruit, eggs, and dead animals.
Habitat: Underground burrows and rock crevices
Lifespan: More than 30 years.
Additional Information: While the coconut crab will stay away from humans, if threatened, they will not hesitate to pinch a person with their claws. Coconut crabs are edible and go well with butter.

Name: Creeper
Classification: Plant
Physical Characteristics: Vines similar to ivy or grape, that thicken with age and develop bark. Younger, green vines are the only ones that can move. The leaves are broad, with five points, and very dark. They grow berries in bunches, like grapes, but these berries remain very small and are hard and white. They are edible, with a taste between grape, blueberry, and apple. The only real weakness is fire...it will retreat from high heat sources.
Diet: Photosynthesis
Habitat: Prefer somewhere that allows the vines to climb, offering better access to the sun and better protection to the berries.
Lifespan: Unknown
Additional Information: The vine does not seem predatory, but it will grab at people. The thin, younger vines may be easily broken if you catch them quickly, but the stronger, thicker green vines are very hard to break. There are no thorns or the like, but they quickly grow shoots to help hold things in place. The closer to berries you are, the faster it reacts to movement to grab and hold it. Struggling makes it tighten faster, but once it has a hold, it doesn't like to let go.

→ D

Name: Dub Rhino
Classification: Dubstep Rhinoceros Noise
Physical Characteristics: A big yellow and black rhinoceros with red/purple tattoo appendages; most noteworthy being the very large tattoo horn.
Diet: Human souls
Habitat: Anywhere there are negative humanoid emotions.
Lifespan: Unknown
Additional Information: Their massive horns make them quite slow, but an attack from one can be quite lethal. They can be born from negative human emotion and feed on those emotions and soul to survive and multiply. They cannot be tamed and act primarily instincts to feed and attack.

→ F

Name: Fruit Cows - Strawberry, Blueberry, and Peach
Classification: Mammal
Physical Characteristics: In shape, they appear to be normal cows, but their bodies are leaner than normal cows and their necks are somewhat longer than normal. They are pastel colored-- blue for blueberry, pink for strawberry, pale orange for peach. They are surprisingly fast creatures, particularly compared to normal cows, as they need to be able to outrun the killer rabbits and yodare cats to survive. They give both meat and milk just like regular cows, but the milk has a slightly fruitier taste to it in association with the type of cow.
Diet: Herbivore. Mainly leaves and fruit, though grass will suffice
Habitat: Near fruit groves, generally near the edges of the Safezone away from human living spaces
Lifespan: Up to 20 years
Additional Information: Fruit cows are gentle creatures by nature, herbivores not prone to attacking other living things. The bulls do lock horns during mating season, however. It would be possible to domesticate them, but in the wild, they would flee from humans.

→ G

Name: Giant Moth
Classification: Lepidoptera
Physical Characteristics: A giant version of the average moth, its wingspan can reach up to 2 or 3 feet. It can come in a variety of colors and patterns, but is usually brown or gray in color.
Diet: Clothing. Sometimes directly off the wearer's back.
Habitat: Adaptable, but prefers the Wastelands.
Lifespan: Unknown
Additional Information: A giant moth releases dust from its wings while it flies around. While relatively harmless to the average adult human, one common side-effect of inhaling this dust is drowsiness. The moth as a whole is harmless, but it has been known to eat clothing off people.

→ H

Name: Hypnotoad
Classification: Amphibian
Physical Characteristics: Has the look of a normal toad, though females can grow to be the size of a cocker spaniel and males about the size of a cat. Typical coloring is brown or black with spots, as well as swirling eyes that make a deep hum when hypnotizing.
Diet: Insectivore.
Habitat: Wet, damp places or near the lake.
Lifespan: 5-7 years
Additional Information: If contact is made with their eyes, a hypnotoad can make a weak-minded person fall into a complete trance in which they believe they are to give "all glory to the hypnotoad"- and say as such. Repeatedly.

→ K

Name: Kappa
Classification: Water sprite
Physical Characteristics: Child-sized humanoids, their bodies are similar to monkeys or frogs. Their face is like a tortoise and they have a thick shell on the back and scaly skin that ranges from green to blue to yellow. There is a water-filled depression on the top of their head, and this water is what kappas gain their strength from, so if it is spilled, they are weakened and may even die.
Diet: Carnivore. Small children, but may eat adults as well.
Habitat: Deep in the lake, small ones may be found in the river.
Lifespan: Unknown
Additional Information: Highly mischievous, they enjoy playing pranks on people that can range from looking up a woman's skirt to stealing food and children.

Name: Killer Rabbit
Classification: Rodent, Mammal
Physical Characteristics: Classic rabbit, most commonly see with white fur. Adults seem to be from 3-6 pounds, short-haired. While they look like normal rabbits, they have sharp teeth that line the top and bottom of their mouths. Two long fangs are the most obvious feature along with its wide-opening mouth.
Diet: Carnivore. Anything that has blood.
Habitat: More akin to the outer regions of the City and very numerous in the Wastelands.
Lifespan: Unknown
Additional Information: Tame unless provoked. Easy to mistake with normal rabbits. Use caution when approaching any rodent. Unknown if carrying disease.

→ N

Name: Niffler
Classification: Mammal
Physical Characteristics: A black fluffy long-snouted creature which burrows in dirt as if it were water.
Diet: Omnivore
Habitat: Nifflers live in lairs up to twenty feet below the surface and produce six to eight young in a litter.
Lifespan: Unknown
Additional Information: Although nifflers are gentle and even affectionate, they are strongly attracted to anything shiny, and can be difficult to control. Because of this, they can be destructive to belongings and should never be kept in a house though they can be very useful for finding treasure.

Name: Null
Classification: Inorganic data
Physical Characteristics: A Null looks like a brightly colored slug-like creature, about eight inches long, made up of two colors alternating in wavy bands of varying thickness, most commonly different shades of one color.
Diet: Energy of any sort, including drained from a living person, though mainly electricity.
Habitat: Urban areas, mostly the powered areas but may venture out if scared.
Lifespan: Unknown
Additional Information: Nulls are normally very skittish and are quick to run from danger, but will 'bite' someone and drain whatever form of energy they have if handled carelessly. They're immune to physical harm but make a squeaking noise if squished.

→ O

Name: Omelet Chicken
Classification: Bird
Physical Characteristics: This chicken looks like an ordinary chicken aside from the fact that it is about the size of a large dog and that it sparkles in the sunlight.
Diet: Omnivore. Insects and seeds, though occasionally it will eat smaller fruits as well. Due to its size, it eats a lot.
Habitat: Dark areas by cliffs so that the sparkling won't attract predators. They flock to open areas in groups in order to feed.
Lifespan: Up to eight years in the wild, due to predators.
Additional Information: Lays eggs the size of a softball that will sometimes yield a fully cooked omelet (the type you get is random). The chances of getting an omelet or regular egg are random as well so sometimes you get the omelet and sometimes you get a regular egg. You won't know until you crack it!

The chickens can outrun most humans and their eggs are safe from the yodare cats because those cats dislike the omelet eggs. The omelets are not very big at all-- about the size of an ipod-- and you can't live off of them alone.

→ P

Name: Peaduck
Classification: Bird
Physical Characteristics: Peaducks look like a Mallard duck (male and female characteristics preserved) with a peacock tail at the end. The males are colourful and have the characteristic big, bright tail whereas the females are brownish grey and have shorter tail feathers, although in comparison to a normal duck, the tail looks elongated. They are rather slow on land, due to the weight of the tail and as such, are easily killed by predators. When swimming, both males and females fan out their tail feathers and use them almost like a sail which adds speed and precision to their movements.
Diet: Omnivore. Grasses, aquatic plants, worms, beetles and insects. No fish, since they can't dive. They love beeing fed bread and crumbs.
Habitat: They spend most of their time near water; lakes, rivers, etc. However, during winter and in mating seasons, they are known to find dwellings either in well-hidden clearings in the wastelands' forests or in buildings. They have no real fear of humans, especially since they often associate them with food and so can be found in small flocks in most green areas within the safezone.
Lifespan: Tamed, 3-5 years. In the wild, they rarely last two breeding seasons. This short life-span has also resulted in extremely large numbers of offspring. A mating pair can have between 10 to 30 ducklings.
Additional Information: Peaducks tend to be unbelievably stupid, so residents shouldn't be surprised if they suddenly stumble upon a pair that has taken residence in the kitchen or closet. One can even consider it a blessing as they (and their eggs) are also very tasty.

Name: Psychedelifox
Classification: Trickster Spirit Noise
Physical Characteristics: A long-limbed green and yellow fox with 1 to 3 tails. When they're mimicking someone, they look like the person they're mimicking, except their faces are covered by a fox mask.
Diet: Human souls
Habitat: Anywhere there are negative humanoid emotions.
Lifespan: Unknown
Additional Information: Psychedelifox's are born from negative emotions and eat human souls to gain further powers and survive, thus they're usually found close to humans. Though they can mimic someone's form, the mimicry is rudimentary at best, with a fox mask covering the face. They have several powers available to them, including shape-shifting into various forms to hide or for defense. They cannot be tamed, as they have no thought process except to attack people and devour souls.

→ R

Name: Rainbow Sheep
Classification: Mammal
Physical Characteristics: These sheep look very much like the Suffolk Sheep with the white world being multicolored like a rainbow. These animals can weigh between 100 - 200 pounds. The males will grow horns.
Diet: Herbivore
Habitat: The sheep arrived during an event. They thrive well in a domestic environment but small herds of no more than 10 can be found by the wastes.
Lifespan: 6-12 years
Additional Information: The wool can be sheared for textiles (it can be difficult to dye into one color) and the meat is edible. Other than the wool, they behave and function like the domestic sheep.

Name: Rose Goblin
Classification: Mammal
Physical Characteristics: The most common description given is if one made a cat out of a rosebush (hence the name). Instead of fur, these lithe little creatures have thorns all over their body, much like a porcupine (so picking them up is possible without getting poked--if they're in a good mood).
Diet: Potting soil, sunlight and mulch or fertilizers, when it can get them. Note: Natural fertilizers, like rotting fruit, leaf cover, decaying flesh-- the usual.
Habitat: Anywhere in the city, though they prefer fresh soil, and like to hang out in rosebushes of any kind.
Lifespan: Unknown but supposedly quite long
Additional Information: If you're lucky enough to spot a rose goblin before it scampers away, you should keep an eye on it. If you do so, it can't escape until, one way or another, you take your eyes off of it. Should you get one to trust and like you though, these creatures can be very affectionate indeed (like a real cat--only made out of thorns). The easiest way (though this is not widely known) to get a rose goblin attached to you is not only to feed it (of course) but to name it--if it will stick around long enough to let you do so.

They are quite intelligent creatures, on order with Siamese or similar cats, though they can't speak any more than normal cats can.

Name: Rodent of Unusual Size (ROUS)
Classification: Rodent (large)
Physical Characteristics: Looks similar to a grotesque rat, complete with hairless tail, and can grow to almost the size of an average male human. Has uneven sharp teeth and a large nose.
Diet: Anything the same size or smaller that it can take down.
Habitat: Normally in wooded areas, the ROUS's have gone urban due to the nature of Adstringendum, and they're not happy about it.
Lifespan: Unknown
Additional Information: Thought to be a myth even in their own world, ROUS's are originally reclusive creatures, but they will stalk and attack anything in their 'territory' that's human sized or smaller when hungry.

→ S

Name: Sleipnir
Classification: Mammal
Physical Characteristics: Basically, it looks like a small stuffed horse. It looks friendly (and it is), though it tends to avoid civilization. They are as tall as somewhere below the knee of an average person. They also come in different colors of fur.
Diet: Herbivore, preferring grass
Habitat: Can be found in the greener areas of the Safezone. Will never appear inside urban areas or buildings.
Lifespan: Unknown
Additional Information:It is said that if you are able to kick a Sleipnir, it will grant you some strength for a limited time. However, the Sleipnir is exceptionally fast, and catching it would be a hard job.

Name: Squid, aka Squid-tan or Ikaguro (formerly under "C" for Colossal Squid)
Classification: Invertebrate, Marine Cephalopod
Physical Characteristics: The colossal squid is like a normal squid with a larger, more robust mantle, two dorsal fins, eight legs and two tentacles. However its beak is longer and sharper, and its tentacles are equipped with sharp hooks - and it is estimated to be between 46-52 feet long.
Diet: Carnivorous, anything from fish to whatever falls into the lake.
Habitat: The Lake
Lifespan: Unknown
Additional Information: Though this species normally exists in deep-sea environments, this particular squid has adapted to the lesser water pressure of the lake of Adstringendum. It seems to be shy and stays mostly in the deeper waters, but may come near the surface in its quest for food.

Semi-adopted by the residents of Adstringendum as a local curiosity and pseudo-mascot, the squid has been given many names by different people. Frequently attacked by the foolhardy and adventuresome, the squid seemingly refuses to be killed.

**Squid-tan is our mascot, so there will be no killing of him/her. There is only one. Occasionally, due to events, smaller squids will be present, either in the lake or another body of water. The smaller squids can be killed (for food or pleasure), but not "Squid-tan."**

→ T

Name: Toadstools
Classification: Fungi
Physical Characteristics: Appearance of giant shrooms, brown. Vulnerable to fire. Its tentacles are used to grab the victims after poisoning them. Grow in colonies, with time they gain the ability to crawl.
Diet: Carnivorous, will try to eat anything that comes near.
Habitat: Safezone. Found in abandoned buildings. Dark places with enough humidity and animals.
Lifespan: Unknown
Additional Information: It reacts to vibrations and releases spores into the air. The spores contain a slowly working poison. Upon inhaling the spores, the victim feels sleepy or weaker, feels headaches, and/or vertigo. If the person does not leave the area quickly, they may lose consciousness. Breathing in fresh air weakens the side-effects. The poison wears off very slowly, even as long as month and half.

→ W

Name: Whoozit
Classification: Mammal
Physical Characteristics: Looks like a cross between a kitten and a teddy bear with yellow, fluffy fur. Whoozits are mainly quadrupeds, but can easily switch to standing on their back legs when the extra height is needed. They can grow to up to 6 or 7 lbs (though if fed too much, they will likely weigh well beyond that) and stand 4 inches tall when on all fours and 7-8 inches tall when on two legs.
Diet: Omnivorous, but partial to sweet things.
Habitat: Urban. Will be most likely to find someplace indoors to live, where it will be sheltered from the elements and close to some sort of food.
Lifespan: Unknown.
Additional Information: While somewhat skittish, they are generally friendly and some of the braver ones will actually approach people. When one does make contact with a person, it is quick to form a bond with them, much like a common pet would. Once such a bond is established, Whoozits will rarely leave their companion's side and are very loyal to them.

They are sometimes mischievous and like to explore, often disappearing for hours or even days at a time, but they will always return home. In line with that mischievousness is their penchant to sniff and play around with whatever objects they--or their companions--find most interesting. The owners of Whoozits often find their little friends curled up next to their most prized possessions, almost wanting to 'protect' the object from others who might come across it.

While they cannot speak, Whoozits will communicate with small, bark-like noises and whines, as well as physically touching those they are trying to communicate with, such as poking, nuzzling, and even sometimes nipping at them.

Name: Winged Pig
Classification: Mammal
Physical Characteristics: Classic pig, except with wings. Commonly pink in color, though some black and spotted ones can be found as well. Piglets are born with tiny, downy wings, much like those of a baby chick.
Diet: Omnivorous, mostly foraging.
Habitat: Various
Lifespan: 15-25 years
Additional Information: Their wings are fully functional. So when someone says that something will only happen 'when pigs fly'... Of course, aside from being harbingers of impossibility, these winged pigs can be quite delicious as well.

→ Y

Name: Yodare aka "Hell Cat"
Classification: Mammal
Physical Characteristics: Has the appearance and size of a young kitten except with a grotesque face featuring large hungry eyes and a mouth full of razor-sharp teeth.
Diet: Anything it can get it's teeth and claws on. Enjoys things that it can tear to shreds.
Habitat: Urban. Abundant in recently abandoned areas with things to rip apart but are rare in the wastelands.
Lifespan: Unknown. They also eat each other so they don't last long.
Additional Information: They drool excessively; especially when angered or excited (easy to do since they seem to understand human language and behavior). Their teeth also fall out easily but grow back quickly too like a shark's. They become intensely focused on tearing something to shreds so it is wise to carry a decoy object to toss at them while you make your getaway.
