That all you got, world?

A $700 water bill arrived this morning.

The water heater. The stupid freaking water heater. The plumbers either broke something or failed to put it back together properly, back in March. And so it quietly trickled away every time we used hot water. And we didn't notice, because the way it's back in the basement, the water drained away almost instantly or quietly dried under the damn thing.

$700 water bill.

This year is KILLING me. Oh, we can cover it, but it will HURT. Our savings will be dead.

All told, water problems have cost me about $10K this year. Thankfully, insurance got $9300 of it or so.

::Sighs::

Fortunately, I'm a very patient man.

Back when I was 18, my parents helped me start two mutual funds. I quietly socked away money for a few years, stopped when they reached about 2K apiece. They've been quietly going up and down ever since.

I let them be for 17 years. They were gonna be seed money for future kid's college payments.

Now I'll call one in.

They're sitting pretty decent right now. Thanks to the dow crash back in '07, they're not as high as I'd hoped. But they're enough, with change left over for other expenses and emergencies yet to come.

This'll refresh our savings. I'll lose a little money on the cash in, but it'll cover us against further emergencies. HOPEFULLY.

2012 seems bound and determined to beat the hell out of my wallet. FUCK YOU, 2012. I WILL survive. My wife will survive. My baby will survive. Every time our house breaks, we'll fix it. And I'll do Gencon and the other planned vacations.

I don't break, I bend. Every time I get hammered down, I stand again. The worst this world can do is kill me, and by gods it's gonna have to put in a LOT of work to do THAT.

When the kid's born I'll set up a new account for her (or him). Chip in a bit every week or two. No need to mess around with stocks, this'll just be straight up savings. Let it grow. That'll be a proper college fund.

Take that, bad luck. Take that and go the hell away.
