Well, This will be my last week working at station one. Ever. As much as I like that place I cannot spend extended periods of time in that lobby without getting sick. I don't just mean nausea from Bob's nasty cigars permanently stinking up the corkboard and carpets. After only one or two days there my voice got kinda husky and it was easy for me to cough with a good wheeze on command. After three days my throat started to hurt. Not badly, could just be drainage (well, it is from excess mucous developing to protect me from all the airborn shit that gets left around when people smoke) but that is also exactly how my illness started last summer. I was MISERABLE and out for a whole week. All because of second-hand smoke exposure.
Now see, I do still bring up the fact that I quit every day to somebody (and that was not an easy thing to do so I'm fucking proud of it and not trying to rub anything in people's faces) but I've majorly calmed down on trying to make the whole world stop. The way I see it now is, if someone wants to smoke, they are putting themselves at risk for all sorts of things and that is THEIR business and their right and it is not my problem or my business or my concern. I start to get mad though when people smoke around me and put ME at risk because of THEIR life choices. I have as much of a right not to smoke as they have to smoke in the first place and I don't appreciate getting bronchitis-y-strep-ish because other people feel they are entitled to smoke anywhere they want. Smoke all you want but do NOT do it at my expense. What's crazy is only one person has smoked around me so far, and it was not much at all. It's all the shit that is just constantly in the air making me miserable and smelly and leaving the gray and brown film on all the cabinets.
So I don't really like most of the staff who is there now and I don't like getting sick and smelling bad. I'm sticking to places with smoke-free lobbies. This makes me worry about going to Spain. Europe isn't exactly known for being smokeless....
