So this morning's topic of conversation here at work was "What music do you love that causes everyone else to look at you funny when you mention you love it?" We're all pretty into music here at work, Martin is even in a band, while the rest of us just listen to it a lot, talk about it, trade cds, etc. So, this question came up and we all had a good laugh. Andy won the contest, as he confesses undying love for Hall and Oates, and we all decided that was the worst. I won't comment on his Genesis love since I do like some of their songs too. I hate to admit it, but my love of Michael Jackson won me second place. Martin wanted to give me first place due to Michael's um... legal problems, but I said we're judging music, not how weird the artist is, and the others agreed, so I got second place. I'm still not sure how my liking Michael Jackson is worse than Martin's love of KISS or Motley Crew, or Isabelle liking 80s Hair bands in general, but I guess that's the point of the conversation; there's always something that others listen to that makes you cringe and ask 'and you like that stuff why?'
We also discovered that most of us have an 'in home' rule where certain bands are not played while the significant other is home. In my case, Mike isn't allowed to play KISS, and I'm pretty much banned from listening to Michael Jackson when he's around. I tried to ban Pink Floyd as well, but that's only because I generally feel like slitting my wrists if I have to hear an entire album by them, its not because I think they just plain suck or anything (and actually, I do absolutely adore 'Wish You Were Here'), like I do with KISS. But asking Mike to ban Floyd would be like him asking me to not play the Tragically Hip, so I let that go :)
And yeah, Michael Jackson IS weird, but I still maintain Thriller is a great party album ;)
