Bull Durham

Found one of my very favourite movies last night at Walmart for a whopping eight bucks. (Yes, I know, Walmart, evil, evil, but... when Jet needs new shoes, I have to take advantage of their dubious labour practices. I do feel guilty for days afterwards though.)

So yeah, I'm now the happy owner of Bull Durham on DVD. Which is really good since I have no idea where my copy of it on tape went.

I'm not a baseball fan by any means (you might be able to tell, from this blog, that I like hockey though), but I love Bull Durham. I love the concept of baseball (or any sport) as a religion, because its so true. We go to regularly worship in big arenas or stadiums. There are rituals associated with viewing, with playing, with being a fan. We feel a kinship with those who worship the same team or sport. You get the idea.

I also just think this a fantasticaly funny movie. "You couldn't hit water if you fell out of a fucking boat" is an awesome line. The guy who can't catch anything because his girlfriend put a curse on his glove, genius. And I love the scene where Crash Davis teaches Nuke his sports cliches.

It also contains a little speech I like to give Jet when he's taking FOREVER to do something...

"You guys lollygag the ball around the infield, ya lollygag your way to first, ya lollygag in an' outta the dugout. You know what that makes ya?Lollygaggers."

Of course, Jet finds being called a lollygagger hilarious, so it may not have the desired effect, but that's ok, 'cause it is hilarious :)

sports, my boy, movies
