Of late, I find myself with a couple of new obsessions. Well ok, neither are really 'new' per say, but they've both intensified to become my foremost obsessions for the last/next while.
The first is a new-found obsession with George R.R. Martin's Song of Ice and Fire series of books. This isn't a new obsession by any means since I first became aquainted with this series back in 1996 when the first book came out. I loved A Game of Thrones. And then when the subsequent novels appeared, I became obsessed again. But, the last new novel came out back in 2005. Martin himself is seriously blocked in trying to get the next one out. So for the last 5 years or so, this wonderful bunch of books had sort of faded in my consciousness. Until a about a year ago when I started following Martin's "Not a Blog" here on LJ. Even though he didn't seem to be making much headway on Dance of Dragons (the next, unfinished book), it was still nice to read what he's up to. And then came the news that HBO was making a series out of A Game of Thrones. FUCKING A! And everything I've read/seen of it so far looks to be spot on. So needless to say, my enthusiasm for the series was returning. Then, a couple of weeks ago, at a friend's place for a boardgame retreat, myself and four other afficionados of the books played the Game of Thrones board game. It was wickedly fun (and I don't just say that because I won), and being 'immersed' in the world of the books again really kick-started my obsession again. As well as more trailers being released for the HBO series. So, I've broken down and dug out my copy of A Game of Thrones again. The continuation of the books may be no where in sight, but I'm still excited to revisit what's gone before and my anticipation of the HBO series honestly knows no bounds.
My second latest obsession also isn't truly recent, but has likewise become more than it was. My first exposure to the actor James Franco was in the Spider-Man movies. Something about him just caught my eye. And then there was his turn in Freaks and Geeks. It was the final episode of that series, where his 'cool' character Daniel plays D&D with the Geeks that I realized I kinda crushed on James Franco. And even though I've not seen a lot of his movies, I loved Pineapple Express, and his Saturday Night Live appearances and his internet shorts (Acting with James Franco series is just priceless!). With his latest movie out (127 Hours), there's been a lot of stories about him and I've been reading them all. And I went to see 127 Hours. Not a great movie, but I was happy to sit with my husband and watch James Franco for an hour and a half. And today, on my brother's recommendation, I'm watching the last episode of James' appearance on General Hospital. It's so funny. Francophrenia indeed!
Yeah, I'll be overly obsessed for awhile on both these things, then it'll settle down to only mildly obsessed as usual :)
