Hello to all of my readers out there:) I believe the last time I posted I was ranting about finals and shelf exams. Well, I finished all of them and I ended up honoring all of my classes this semester...hooray:) I have since managed to purge all of the information, but hey...I got thru my first year, right? Since exams I have moved back HOME to New Orleans...hip hip hooray!! I participated in Camp Tiger the week after exams, and that was a ton of fun...I just really hated making the commute to BR everyday. The kids were awesome and we all had a really great time. Right after that, my kid brother graduated from high school (a minor miracle...haha!), and then Steven and I went to New York City and spent way too much money:) We saw a couple of Broadway shows and did the all important "touristy stuff." We went to the Empire State building, NBC studios, circle line cruise of Manhatten island, etc., etc. It was so nice to take a trip and not worry AT ALL about school. Steven and I got a much needed vacation:)
Since the trip I've been managing to stay pretty busy. I've been doing some informal observations with a child neurologist at Children's Hospital for the last couple of weeks. It's really been one of the best experiences I've ever had. He has really gone out of his way to teach me stuff and his colleagues have been so receptive to my interest in their field. It's almost as if they are actively recruiting me! So far I've done one week in the outpatient setting and one week on service in the inpatient setting. I've seen so many cool things...off the wall genetic disorders, loads of epilepsy, pediatric movement disorders, and tons of other stuff. I really can't remember the last time I've been so excited about something. I feel pretty confident about the fact that this is where I'll end up. The sucky part is knowing that I still have nine years of training left to be a card-carrying member of the group of child neurologists...I'll get there though!
It's just so amazing to me that he has been so willing to sit down and really explain stuff to me. He's gone over every CT, MRI, EEG, for each patient he sees with me. He's also gone thru teaching files (which contain really cool EEGs or CTs, etc.). One of the first days I was there, he spent at least 45 minutes teaching me about seizures and epilepsy...he wrote out all these charts to help me too. Isn't that awesome? What's also really exciting is that just the other day he emailed me to basically say that he's been impressed by my enthusiasm and the neurology knowledge I have, and he said that he's going to write a letter of recommendation for me at the end of my stay this summer for my residency program. How cool is that!! I nearly stroked out when I read that in my email:) Anyway, if you haven't gathered by this point that I am so excited about what I've been doing these last few weeks then I'll just come out and say it: It's been a long time since I've been this excited about something...I look forward to going to the hospital every day because I get to see really interesting things and work with great people. I'll keep you posted on how the rest of my time goes with them:)
I have one more thing I need to add and then my journal will be completely updated. Tristi's bachelorette party (which was a blast) was this past weekend. Unfortunately, I have to go right now, so I can't do it justice in this particular post. I will add it tomorrow bc it is worthy of it's own entry:)
Til then...
