Well, we had our conference call with Dean Hollier today. It went ok, but I've still got plenty of questions! In the way of housing, he said that they are in the process of reserving 1,000 recreational vehicles (campers/trailers) for the students...it'll be our very own med student trailer park! Dean Hollier was very nice, and was pretty honest in saying that they are still working out alot of the kinks. He said that they are looking into doing some type of video conferencing for classes. I hope they do. The one thing that I was really disappointed to hear was that gross anatomy is not going to be like it was in NO. I mean, I guess I knew that. It's going to be more like models, computer-generated dissections, and a few on hand cadavers, I think. I'm one of the weirdos that really likes gross anatomy lab, and I actually get quite a bit out of it. Don't get me wrong...it can be the most frustrating experience ever, but I really enjoy it. We'll see how it goes.
Steven has a cousin that lives like two blocks from Pennington, and she has offered us a place to stay for the next couple of monthes. That is so incredibly generous of her and her family. We didn't even ask. I think she found out that the school would be moving to Baton Rouge, and she took it upon herself to call Steven's dad and offer up her house. She and her husband are alums of the LSU med school in NO...in fact, her husband is a past student body president. They have been so helpful this last year with finding a good place to get a house and getting scholarships. This just tops it all...it looks pretty probable that we'll be staying with them. The only downside is that we can't bring our dog, Cassie. They didn't say we couldn't, but dogs are very high maintenance and they have three children. We'll have to figure something out, but I'm definitely not excited about not being able to have my dog for all that time:( My mom said that she'd watch her for us, and Lauren and Brett have agreed to watch her if there's ever a time my mom can't. That's way better than having to kennel her...I don't think we could do that to her. We're going to miss her soo much...she's our "snuggle buddy." She's like a little furnace for your feet at night:) She's a great study buddy too.
Anyway, we're going to our house tomorrow. We're leaving at 4am. I don't think that's early enough considering that we just read on one of the forums that 90 is already backed up for miles! Man...it's going to take a while to get there. They (the police) are not letting anyone in unless they've got id proving they live in Jefferson parish, water, and food. They don't have the man power to rescue all kinda people if they don't bring water, so they're insisting that the citizens do so. We ran around gathering supplies today for the trip back...water, gas, snacks, masks (that fridge is gonna be FUNKY), bug spray, hand sanitizer, baking soda, etc. I'll let you guys know how it goes!
