Well, it's been forever since I posted.
My holiday present to myself is to grant myself the time to update my blog before I forget all that has happened in the last 3 months. It's been quite busy. I will probably do this in a few posts so I don't lose my mind.
I'll start with Christmas and Hannukah. Happy holidays everyone! Believe it or not, N and I have spent a nice, quiet holiday with just us and Max at home. This is the first holiday since Max was born that we didn't travel anywhere and no one came to visit. Don't get me wrong - we love when family come to visit, but it's nice to have spent some quality family time at home with just the 3 of us.
Since Hannukah and Christmas overlap this year, it has been nice to all open presents together. I read the calendar wrong, so we started Hannukah one day early. oops.... We did the 2nd night twice to make up for it. =) We lit candles and said the prayers. Max helped to open his presents too. You can see some pictures of it on my flickr page. (If you don't have access to my flickr page and want to see the photos, send me an email and I'll add you to my friends and family list.)
Max got a wonderful new hat knitted by his grandma (my mom). It has his name knitted into it. Very fetching and warm too. He wore it to daycare the next day since it has been riduculously cold here. In the last week, we had morning temperatures of -13 degrees with a -30 degree windchill a few days in a row. It should be illegal to be that cold. I bundled Max up in his warm puffy coat, his new hat and mittens. I was so proud of him that he wore the mittens too. It has been a struggle to get him to keep them on, but he has done it a few days in a row now. In the past, when he hasn't worn the mittens he cries on the way home from daycare. Since he wore the mittens, he hasn't fussed at all. I wonder if his hands were just cold and he was upset about it. Maybe he gave into wearing the mittens because he sees how his hands are nice and toasty when he keeps them on. Can I just say, I miss having mittens on a string in my coat. Those were the days... His mittens are really more like socks, though - no thumbs! It's qute cute. But I digress...
Last night was Christmas Eve. We each opened one present as is N's family tradition, and it was Hannukah too, which is good by me. We cooked a roast in the crock pot for dinner and ran a quick errand or two. Max wore his toddler Santa Hat and got lots of smiles from the salespeople at Home Depot. We made 2 batches of chocolate chip cookies after Max went to bed - one batch for us and one for the teachers at Max's daycare. I put them in a big tin, which they can give to the kids to play with after they eat the cookies if they want. We put Max in his red silk pajamas - a baby shower gift from one of my mom's co-workers. When we put the pants on, he rubbed his hands on them and gave me the funniest smile. It was like he was saying, "ooohhh, silky!" We took some photos for posterity, of course. He woke up after he had been asleep only a short while, though, and I thought he might be cold (the silk pjs are short sleeved) so I changed him into a red fleece sleeper instead. Perhaps the silk pjs will still fit this summer.
Today is Christmas. Merry Christmas! I took the morning shift so N could sleep in. Max and I got up and played around a little bit. We had some breakfast and did a webcam with grandma. N got up and we opened some presents. We each got some stuff we wanted, and some things that were a surprise too. The big ones were that N got a PS3 and some games/accessories for it and I got a new ipod Nano, a new electric toothbrush, and a label maker. I guess it says something when you are excited about getting a toothbrush for Hannukah... (thanks mom - I love it!)
Max got lots of goodies too - a new wool pumpkin hat (knitted by grandma) some books, some CDs of music, a bath toy, some lego-like toy (which we'll probably wait to give him for a bit), and some Thomas the train stuff (we'll wait on this too). He also got some roly tonka cars that he seemed to like a lot, and some big blocks made out of cardboard boxes. We saved a few presents for him so he could continue to open presents for the rest of Hannukah too. We spoke to our family on the phone and did some webcams with them. I made a batch of pancakes and a batch of blueberry pancakes to freeze for Max's breakfasts and lunches. We played with the new toys and had a nice family day together. It was great to just hang out at home. All in all, a good holiday.
N is now downstairs, playing with the new PS3 and I am writing in this blog. Tomorrow, we will bring Max to daycare where he will be happy and safe, and we will go to the basement and work on rebuilding the wall around the new fireplace. I hope we can get all the framing done in one day. We've got a dozen 2x4s in the garage and some power tools. Should be fun!
I hope you all had a wonderful holiday with friends and family. Peace be with you in the new year.
