Oblivion

Okay, I've got Oblivion at long last.
Took me about 2 hours to actually work round how to get it working, what if working out a cabextractor program to get past the SecuROM checks and then use a NoDVD crack to get past the DVD check, and make a copy of the ESM file from the second CD in the hopes of getting it working in the first CD...

This is it? THIS is the game which everyone says is so amazing?
I mean...really?

Compared to Morrowind, the menu is now in this huge blocky letters, meaning it takes up more of the screen, so you have to go through about 10 different screens just to see the freaking stats, let alone what WEAPON you're wielding...
I'm used to Morrowind showing you all your items, weapons, stats, levels, experience, AND map, all on the same screen.
What, is your average RPG player suddenly really dense or something? Too much information to take in, is it?

Nice and pretty though.
And how are you supposed to drop items? (I had to google that bit, and you press shift for that for some reason...)

The battle system, however, I very much admire. A great improvement from before, although I can see that magic spells still suck a little bit. Since the graphics are a lot better, the enemy movement is pretty damn good.

I'm also very impressed by what Bethesda has done to the lockpicking system! You can actually manually pick the locks yourselves, which is pretty neat. :D I love that little thing. In Morrowind you just had to click, again and again, until you got through.

I don't know about you, but when I first make my new character, their skin is jet-black, which just seems weird...
Maybe it's the system I'm using. If it really happens in Oblivion then that would be pretty strange.

Anyway, I haven't played much of the game, the Emperor dies (thank god, his face was annoying), and I got out the sewers whilst killing stupid goblins, and then I went swimming and got killed by a bunch of bandits.
It is pretty good, though.
But it's also very very overrated, because Morrowind is a lot better in my opinion.

Still, very pretty and all that.

...I just got that picture from a review page which claimed Oblivion is the best game ever.
No. No it isn't. Fix your flawed menus, change the system in which you speak to NPCs, maybe stop spoon-feeding the player (I mean, I had picked up 15 different lockpicks, a whole set of heavy armour, several potions and top-notch spells even before leaving the second ROOM...back in Morrowind that would have taken a DAY) and then you'll have a really damn good game.

I think I'll continue with it, just to see how it goes. RPGs usually hook me with their storyline, and I'd like to see how this one follows out.
Although, I would say it's probably a lot less frustrating than its prequel. So far, anyway.

morrowind, oblivion, elder scrolls
