Torchwood - Kiss Kiss Bang Bang

Jan 16, 2008 22:52

Okay its un-edited, un proof-read, i tend to forget names of the characters, and Captain John Hart, played by James Marsters, is referred to by Each of those four names at some point.

It may be incomprehensible now, but i can't be bothered to edit it till later, if at all.

Nonetheless, below are my thoughts, as written down *during* the show, on the new episode of our lovely series: Torchwood.

The start, amazing, if i do say so.

The fish taunting Ianto? i thought it went on too long, but then that's when i was expecting Ianto to be decisive about it. Its probably cool that we'll never know if he would have fired.
Oh, and 'Bloody Torchwood!' Hilarious, wonderfull, broke the tension perfectly. Does bug me and get me thinking about 'how does everyone know, and what do they know?'.

James Marsters? Rocks. There is quite simply no way he can be what i expect or what i'm hoping for, standards are too high, so i need to disengage those expectations and just see what they've actually done. Still the whole 'not bluffing' thing is a farely obvious parralell with Ianto, and Jack, and sets James out as distinctive in his handling of it. Ianto's too nervous, Jack's straight down to business, but James is a taunter, likes the theatrical. Dropping him does bug me, killing him squicks me, but i can see that Marsters character can have a decent backstory and reason for killing the evildo-er, believing its the only way to 'clean up'. On the other hand, he's probably just a bastard, but i had to run it through my head to get into the sort of mindset that would do that.

Of course Marsters had the very different situation that they guy *was* bluffing. I'm not sure the fish guy was. That's good for not making things too artificial, and it really shows the difference between the characters.

Gwen pushing Jack into the wall? perfect. Ecactly how the character would react, keeping herself calm at first, then deciding at a moment's notice that its okay to let it out, at the moment when she gets overwhelmed.

And he goes to a bar... of course he does. [Smile] Go...Go... Stay. Rather fun, very brash and bold. He takes control. Jack settling back in is fun, just shows us the personalities jostling, that's half of what we watch the show for.

And then we have the moment of fun. "What can you be doing that's more important than me.". Its subtle, but the slash fans will be pretty hyped up about a pairing like this, and every single one of them will have caught it. [grin]

Obi-Wan? PERFECT!
Imagining the folk's reactions to the admission of 'guilt', wonderfull for stretching the characters, testing their relationship with Jack. Marsters seems to see it as a misdemanour.

Jack really is the Daddy isn't he? they miss him when he goes and leaves them alone.

And they're high-nooning. What are the odds they'll hug? oh, come on, its so obvious, its fucking guaranteed. Its in there for the joy of us watching it, thinking we're clever, *knowing* what'll happen. If they really were going for a shoot-out they'd have shot it differently, no need for showing 'twitchy trigger fingers'. That's just not Torchwood's style. By the time they're facing off it can't be a hug, so its got to be a...

YESSS! The kisss!!! so much for 'subtext'. And the punch keeps the energy going, keeps the testosterone. Hardly sissy. And its a play-fight! but serious hardcore playfight! Well that puts in the surprise that we *Didn't* get from the kiss.

And they're wrecking the place. This is okay? asside from the killing, this is just... pointless violence. They think its allright to do it? they're just so much more important that the world around them can sort itself out later? I assume that's where they're going, and Jack will probably regret it later, but Marsters won't, to show the difference.

And we see the Torchwood team, adds nothing, except continuity, and reminding us they're there.

And he's the daddy again. Good comedy with them all agreeing its more fun.
The gun face-off, starts to show the differences, keeps the sex-talk in it though. "Worked my way up through the Ranks" "Bet the ranks were very gratefull.". A good line keeps you focused on the flirt, helps you not to notice that we're establishing differences. Jack works, 'John' bitches. And Jack was that little bit more glad to stop the fight and start the drinks.

Then its more obvious. "Rehab" and the bottles. "murder rehab." And then its sad, and 'John' needs some support... all leads quickly to the confrontation.

"God he's worse than Jack" Great line.
And Jack does bring them in.

They're still playfull, and there's wonderfull agression with John shooting out the windows to bring out Torchwood. The banter is playfull, and its good to see Hart taking on the slightly more 'subby' side of things (Wife, smaller) but taking an almost vicious aggressive sort of pride in it. (Lasts longer, Good wife).

And then we get into a small minute or so of techno-babble that does nothing except continue the plot and provide excuses. Lets hope they deal with it quick, right?

Good deflection. Great lightsaber reference. Apparantly Marsters is still a good guy? Fun watching him react to the girl. Jack's still getting gruff, taking charge, but not the fun. Nice of them to make it obvious he has an ulterior motive. Oh God, they're going to make JAck kill his friend aren't they? please don't have them kill jack for a minute.

And of COURSE he's heavily heavily armed.
Heh! and there's tension with Gwen too? Wonderfull jealousy there. Its nice to see Jack hiding the dissapointment. Again, they make it pretty blatent, no need for subtelty. "Well no-one else will have me"

And its nice to see Gwen be so take-charge, and underhanded. And again, so blatent about it with Jack. Gwen uses 'old Gwen' questions, but you know she's digging. And such a wonderfull time to compare against Rhyss. Of Course she broke the rules. Each one in turn probably. HAving him vanish is good for getting the fear back up, and uncertainty. He's actually telling Gwen the truth, but being manipulative about it.

And then double-cross. Good that they didn't waste time. They showed us everything that we needed, and then moved into the vicious, aggressive confrontation. Its getting more and more obvious the cannister came from Marsters, hidden where they'd take ages to find. Is Jack all he wants?

They've deliberately shown Gwen's dangerous plan not working. So she's good, she's getting there, but she's no Jack.

And he's more of a psycho than we thought too.

And Jack's making an effort with Ianto, its sweet. Very sweet. Fun to see the Ianto's not sure how to deal.

Fairly artificial that JAck's not around to get caught in Hart's trap. But then subtlty was never in Torchwood's bag of tricks. Its about the relationships, like anything else.

And its beautifully blatent, asking why Jack won't travel, why he stays. That's what its really all about.

Wow, he just plain exectuted Jack, pushed him off. Really is a Psycho.

And its fun to tease us about the 'bombs', admit what a MaGuffin they are. Or at lest that they're not what he claimed. He landed on the BENCH? how silly, and unlikely. I suppose the death had to happen, i think it was done well, especially with it referencing the first ep, when we were all thinking 'what if he fell' at the end.

And of course they found Gwen. Hardly a shock. But it keeps the energy going.

And then the confrontation. Bringing it back to the fish is unnecessary, but fun. Wow! Gwen? And the shock of JAck coming back is excelent.

Marsters does fear and shock very well. You can watch him fighting to keep his composure.

Vivious to give him the 10 minutes, very very very very fun. Creates a good bit of excitement with the hostage. Loops back to the start.

And Gwen So would sacrifice herself, still, if she can think of a good way of doing it without dying, that'll be cool as well.

Heh! five minutes to live and he starts to appreciate the world? its just a moment, but its practically subtle by Torchwood standards. Lovely references to how it 'ought' to work, from Marsters, how the cliche's ought to come in. The doctor saying trust me i'm an improvisor, not saying doctor, very self effacing

(Before i forget, the stopwatch, and Ianto's glee, very him. Very fun.)

And MArsters is... i don't know, he might be sent out somewhere, but its probably somewhere he can't come back from. And he'll probably die.

And unpausing... now!

And a good excuse for the sportscar. They get there faster.
Last SECOND is a cliche, but who needs subtle?

And like Hart DOESN'T Have another manipulator.
And now we have our new recuring plot-line? very silly, not working for the MArsters character... but he pushes it all along.

YES! he comes back!
And yes, its gonna be a good season...
