A letter to the president

Jun 30, 2011 10:36

I had significant trouble trying to get my federally compliant driver's license today. And in the end, did not receive it.

This is the e-mail I sent to the president via the white house contact us button.

I wanted to tell my story about trying to renew my license to become federally compliant. One of the requirements include two pieces of mail (non-personal) that contain my name and address and are postmarked or dated (dated being key here) within 60 days. I don't receive junk mail (I've opted out and had my name removed from several lists, though I still receive several pieces a month for the last owners, who not only are not longer living here, but are no longer living!). And thanks to the "green" movement all my bills are done online. I print out my cable and electric bill knowing that they are pieces of would be mail that are dated within the last 60 days. Apparently my attempt to be green has backfired though! I can only provide one piece of printed proof (even though they both fit the requirements as written). I am told I can use my voter registration card (which is funny since it's based on my driver's license, although this is a moot point since I don't carry it with, as I bet most people don't, not even you, Mr. President) or a check book (mine doesn't have my current address, further proof that check book proof would be meaningless). I am told there is nothing they can do. I can get a non-federally compliant license today and either use my passport after 2014, or upgrade my license for another $10 later.

There needs to be a better way for this to be handled. I shouldn't need to sign up for a service that penalizes me (getting paper bills) or hurts the environment (getting junk mail) to prove my address.

Please advise.

Thank you for your time and response.
