Back to work tomorrow.
This was the first new years I have spent in Wellington since about 2008. Stig and I headed down to Christchurch pre-xmas to be there for Emma's surgery. Her tumor had reappeared, in the spine this time. The operation went well, and she was kayaking two days later. One week later she was back to swinging on the washing line.
We were in Nelson for the days around xmas. It was nice to get away for a bit, but a little too stressful this year. We flew back to Wellington late boxing day.
It has been good hanging around Wellington and not having to go anywhere or do anything. We've had a few social gatherings that have ended in the wee hours, but largely impromptu. For new years we stopped by Susan and Sean's traditional New Years party, and then headed out to Island bay for Ingo and Verity's. There was, eventually, a bbq - once the rain had stopped, and a Brazier; Party games, including melting solder and dropping it into water to predict fortunes; Setting 70% alcohol on fire to make mulled wine, and subjecting those not born here to kiwi music.
At about 4am, the last of us walked back into town, arriving home just after sunrise. We ran into a lot of people walking the other way, including at least one familiar face. There was a surplus of total strangers wishing each other happy new year, as they stubbled home from town.

Headed to the beach today, as it would have felt strange not to at least once. I'm a bit in denial about the holiday being over. I think I might have another gin and tonic.
