So, here we go again...
As soon as the first informations about season 5 and the first episodes start popping out, the angry, disappointed and all around affronted fans start rearing up their ugly little heads. Yes, SamGirls, I am talking about you!
Well, to be fair, I’m not talking about all the SamGirls, because in a show with TWO LEAD CHARACTERS it’s pretty much expected and perfectly normal that some fans like one more than the other. I get that, I seriously do.
No, my rant is specific for all those other SamGirls out there, the ones that have their measuring tape and scales all ready and at hand and that, as soon as they find any sort of discrepancy between the attention given to Dean in detriment of Sam, jump to defend their poor, abandoned character.
The only reason I can think up to explain such an odd behavior is, perhaps, the fact that they were given bad habits in that regard by the show that we all love. Because, really, when the show itself has several episodes and several characters telling us that IT’S ALL ABOUT SAM, of course the fans will be expecting that to be true.
So, it doesn’t matter that season 1 was more heavily about Sam’s recent lost and his need for revenge and the awakening of his powers; or that season 2 was all about the special kids (of which Sam is one) and dealing with the loss of their father; or that season 3 had Ruby grooming Sam to be the big leader of a demon army and that half of hell was trying to end Sam, while the other half couldn’t wait to kiss his ass; or that, despite Dean’s (FINALLY!) arc in the story in SEASON 4 (see how patient we DeanGirls were?), Sam was still heavily feature with the growth of his powers and his demon-blood addiction.
So, Dean gets a story-arc of his own, and suddenly the show is all about him. Really? Are you serious?
Never mind the fact that Dean’s story in the show, so far, has been based on his relation WITH SAM, and what he felt about the changes that SAM WAS GOING THROUGH... in a show about TWO BROTHERS, that’s perfectly normal. I mean... it's all about Sam, right? Puff!
In all honesty, if we were given a season 5 entirely dedicated to Dean and his relations with the angels (which I highly doubt because the people behind the show have already proven not to be morons and idiocy is a condition that takes more than a Summer to set in) it would actually balance things between them.
But that won’t happen... because Sam CHANGED LAST SEASON, so he will have to deal with that; and SAM’S ADDICTED TO DEMON-BLOOD, which he also will have to deal with; and SAM FREED LUCIFER, which I’m sure will have repercussions, even if it’s just the occasional fruit basket from Luci to say thank you!
So, really, people! Lets just relax, seat back and enjoy the ride. Some episodes will be Dean heavy, some episodes will be Sam heavy, heck! We might even have another episode Jim/Castiel heavy... it’s still the same show and the ride will be, certainly, worth it ;o)
