I'M BACK!!!!!!
I gotta say, coming to a SPN convention for the very first time, to any convention, for that matter, is kind of a surreal experience. In the best sense possible.
By the time the convention begun, I had already been in Rome for three whole days and still, arriving at the reception of Jus in Bello was like walking into another planet.
The confusion was kind of overwhelming, I must confess, and for a couple of seconds I feared I had made a terrible mistake. And then I saw and talked to the first actor, Chad Lindberg (Ash) and all of that went away. What a sweet, sweet guy. Laid back, no pretense, no particular sense of being special being broadcast across. Which made him special all in itself.
His was the only autograph I got on Friday because we arrived really, really late at the hotel (don’t really know how that happened, given that we arrived three frigging days before the convention even started).
Chad looked at the poster, nodded his approval, looked me in the eyes and congratulated me. Each of them said the same, and I know that’s just them being nice, but it still felt really good to hear.
Saturday morning we were up bright and early and already in line for Jensen’s autograph. In the same room, we had Jason Manns, Mark Sheppard and Rob Benedict. Genevieve was there as well, putting a special appearance for autographs only (didn't get hers though). Jared dropped by to stay with her for a bit, give her some support because, as he told us, she gets very nervous in these things. So, we got a little show of affection between those two. And don’t go puking your face like that... it was sweet, in that still-newly-weds’ way and very, very endearing. And as she was seating in the table right beside Jensen, when he was done, he passed by to say hello to them both. A friendly grasp and pat on Jared’s shoulders and a kiss for his wife (hehehe, he was at a weird angle, so she ended up kissing him back on the neck.)
Jensen was having a good time, despite claiming to be waiting for the jet-lag to hit him (though, I did notice that he kept hitting the caffeine pretty hard all afternoon. During his panel he had a Redbull, which I never tried but hear are pack-filled with caffeine, and then during autographs he’d switch to Coke).
Now, Jensen was the one I wanted to meet above all others and I went in there perfectly aware that it would all happen very quickly and that I might not even get to say more than ‘Hi!’ to him. Being in line for his autograph, slowly walking towards the table where I could see him seating, it helped a lot to calm the butterflies in my stomach.
He has this... movie star presence about him. Don’t get me wrong; he didn’t behave like a diva or was anything but polite, professional, sweet and above all, honest. But some people just have that presence, you know? They fill up the room.
Jensen certainly has that.
He paused, looked at the poster, took the trouble of unfolding the whole thing (it’s kind of big and the part with his face was right at the top, so he didn’t had to do that), he looked at me before signing it and asked if I’d done that. I melted a little inside that I’d got to exchange more than a ‘hi!’ and a thank you with him. Looking back I think I could’ve totally gotten away with a handshake (many did), but I got too embarrassed first with his praise, and then with the fact that I accidentally brushed my hand on his when he was handing me the poster over.
And I loved the fact that he stares at you right in the eyes when he thanks you for coming, not just ‘eye-contact’ as they all did, but really looks at you. And what’s even more special, he listens when you thank him back for his work.
On an extremely shallow note, I caught Jensen three times on the autograph’s room (because they usually had more than one actor there). The first time, when I actually talked with him, he was wearing the black button-up shirt (pretty much the same as the one Jared was wearing); the second time was when I went in to get Jared’s autograph, in the same day, but Jensen had already changed to a blue t-shirt (he claimed that he was sweating like mad). I tell you, if he had been wearing that when I had to actually use higher brain functions in his presence, it would simply not happen. The last time was on Sunday, while waiting for Misha’s autograph.
After Jensen’s autograph on Saturday, I moved right away to Mark’s table. The man is an absolute sweet and recognized my brother’s name as Portuguese (mine, not so much *g*) and shook his hand.
Rob was truly amazed by the poster. Either he’s a way better actor than the others, or he was really being sincere. Plus, he is Chuck *g*, which I found awesome!
Well, he’s not as nervous, because he was quite at ease and having fun, but he has the same sweet and almost apologizing way of speaking.
After spending that much time in the autographs’ room, we arrived late for Misha’s panel... which he didn’t let pass, of course *g*
Honestly, I felt like I was arriving late to some classroom with the most annoying teacher ever *g*. It was all in good fun, of course, but you do get a little embarrassed for not being there on time, especially as he goes on saying that we’d missed a life changing experience because we’d been busy with the other ‘lesser’ actors *g*
I won’t go into details about the panels, because I’m sure loads of videos will pop up (as soon as I can find my way around YouTube, I’ll post mine as well).
After Misha, which I unfortunately didn’t see much, it was Jensen’s time. He arrived early, sneaking up behind Misha, signaling us to be quiet about his presence. Then he calmly poured a glass of water and sprinkled Misha *g*
When it was time for Jensen to give the stage to Jared, Jared arrived with two stuffed animals, a giraffe and a zebra, which were to be auctioned later. Jensen promptly named his zebra Bartholomew and Jared named the giraffe Francesco.
Now, what happened next really needs to be seen rather than told and I do have the video for you guys to see it (and I’m sure it’s already somewhere on YouTube, but if there isn't, I'll try to put mine there), but Jensen and Jared’s puppet show was hilarious, with Jensen asking questions to his Barth and Jared answering for the zebra in this weird mash of Italian, Spanish and French *g*
After Jared, we had a panel with both Chad and Rob. There was few people there, so it had a sort of cozy and intimate feeling to it and the lines to ask questions were so small that I actually got up to ask one. I asked Rob what was his reaction when he found out that Chuck was God (which he said he’d missed on the first read of the scrip; it was the crew reaction when he got on set that made him go back and look more closely at what was written) and to Chad I asked what Ash’s reaction would be if Jo and Ellen showed up at Heaven’s Roadhouse (to which he promptly enacted a ‘come to daddy!’ welcome *g*)
After lunch, it was time for more waiting around (which ended up being cool, because the guys were busy doing photo ops and private meetings, but they had to pass through the same corridor where we were over and over, so we got to see them quite a lot. Misha took the picture that showed up in Twitter and Jensen and Jared were filming the crowd).
Jared and Jensen’s panel was awesome, specially when they realized that they could play with the playback in the background (the panels were being filmed and aired with a second delay on the screen behind them and it had a tunnel effect, with each image happening a second after the previous. Jensen and Jared were like two little kids playing with that. Totally hilarious! Again, telling it doesn’t make it justice, but I do have the video, including Jensen’s... ‘workout’ and Jared’s... hum... ‘thrusting’)
Misha butt in on their panel, asking a question in this awesome accent, which when asked by Jensen, he said to be from India-Russia *g*, a place, Jensen had heard, didn’t have very attractive people *rofl* Again... see video later.
Missed Sebastian’s and Richard panel because I was in line for Jared’s autograph :(
But man... cameras really don’t do justice to Jared. I mean, he looks good on camera, but across the table, he looks HOT! Well... and, you know, hot because he’s a sweaty kind of guy *g* But HOT and with the cutest eyes ever!
I think that was the biggest difference I found between the two leads. Jared is made of lovely details that put together a very, very yummy puzzle; Jensen is just yummy in the whole. You look at him and you really can’t decide which part to ogle more when you have the chance (I did make an effort to notice the eyes -brutal task, I know, but I’m daring like that- and honestly, the only other time I’ve seen that color -at least in the that light we were in- was in lions. I swear to you, that was the image that came to me. Not staring at the sun, not Dean... just a big cat *g*)
Finished the day on Saturday with Jason’s concert (who, by the way, was probably staying in the same wing of the hotel as I was because we rode the elevator together a couple of times). I have to confess that I didn’t knew his work, apart from the music he sang with Jensen and the one that was on the show, but I LOVED THE CONCERT.
For one, the guy is incredibly sweet and open. We were all in our assigned seats, which placed us all scattered through the room and he invited us to seat on the floor near the stage, bringing the whole bunch of us closer to him and immediately the whole thing took on this jam-session, private-concert feeling that made it truly amazing.
On the last day of the convention, anything goes. That seems to be the rule :)
We started the day by finally getting Misha’s autograph but, as he was once again running late, everything was a bit rushed. It was understandable and very well handled by Julie (American, from her accent), the actors’ manager. While we were waiting in line for Misha, she stopped for a bit and chatted with us. That woman completely ‘oozed’ efficiency and did a terrific job (which earned a very deserved standing ovation at the end of the convention) throughout the whole convention.
So, after Misha’s hit and drive autograph (poor guy was totally being herded because there were literally over a hundred people waiting for his autograph) we went to see Misha and Sebastian’s panel. My god, were those two funny together!
Sebastian, as he himself confessed, was slightly drunk. Still. *g* apparently the previous night had ended at five am for him, so this was barely four hours later... which really isn’t enough to process all the vodka he claimed to have had.
And he managed to keep Misha totally on his toes by being completely mad and horny and did I mention insane?
After a panel that went from gay porn to normal porn to ménage à many (you can see the tone they set for that panel right there), someone started messing with their images in the big screen behind them. All we could see was a pair of hands, in shadow, playing with their projected images (pretending to eat them, petting them, making holes *g*). It was a really funny beat, especially when Jensen walked out and kept on pranking them by asking a question in a very, very thick Russian accent (payback for what Misha did, I guess *g*).
Next we had Jensen’s panel and the high moment, for me at least, was when someone (who I later found out to be none other then my friend
amber1960 ) asked Jensen what were his best memories of Rome. He told about the trip last year and how Daneel called a friend of hers, who is a nun at the Vatican, to help them out and they ended up with a private tour and mass (under this beautiful statue of St. Michael killing a dragon -if you’ve been there, you known which I’m talking about). It sounded like a lovely experience and he sounded very touched by it.
After lunch, the insanity just notched up a level. Richard and Mark were suppose to have separate panels, one after the other, but they just decided to do it together. And they had, what I believe, the most incredible and memorable of all panels.
Mark started things up by giving away everything that he could find at the actors’ table (they had candy, water, Cokes and Redbull cans in there) and then they decided that they didn’t want to stay on stage and be static, but rather walk around the room. We got very lucky, because there was a small corridor in between rows right in front of us, and that’s where they spent most of their time.
After that, I thought nothing could top the level of proximity and enthusiasm that those two manage to build up (look forward for Mark’s stalking-of-the-poor-camera-guy; it was hilarious!).
I was wrong, of course, because Jensen and Misha had the stage next. And they started by playing a bit of air drums and then... doing absolutely nothing because Misha said he was comfortable just sitting there with Jensen *g*
I kid you not.
They sat on stage for a good couple of minutes and didn’t talk at all, just looked around, looking bored and pretending to be awkward with each other.
Now, my seat was kind of crapy, which is why I don’t have that many good pictures of the guys, but during this panel I was up, very close to the stage, in one of the lines to ask questions. I didn’t get to ask anything because they played a lot with each question, but boy! I had one hell of a view :))
So, best part ever, some fans took a piece of a scrip from 'When Harry met Sally'. It was the talk between the two guys. They’re discussing fake orgasms.
So, you can imagine the fun they had with that. For starters, instead of the two chairs facing the crowd, they turned the chairs around to face each other. And then Jensen decided to do all of his ‘lines’ with a NY gang’sta accent *g*
It was ROFL... especially when it got to the part when Misha started faking an orgasm for Jensen’s character (the dialogue was something about the statistics of how many women fake orgasms, and Jensen’s character saying that no women faked with him because he was that good *g*). We all had to agree with him *g*
Another funny part was when they started talking about stuff that made them crack up on set. For Misha, it was Jensen's 'how'ya doing?' sexy look, which according to him, never fails to break his concentration. From the sample we got from Jensen, I have to totally agree with Misha. Jensen had a funny story from an upcoming episode, where he was standing in front Sebastian, the camera doing Jensen's close up. Knowing that the camera wouldn't see anything bellow Jensen's chest, Jared walked in on all fours and snick in behind him. Next thing they know, Jared had his arm between Jensen's legs and grabs his thigh. Jensen doesn't break, but Sebastian who was watching the whole thing, starts giggling. Jared, apparently frustrated that he hadn't been able to break Jensen's concentration, starts pressing harder until Jensen was sure his tendons would pop out. And still he didn't break! (he sounded quite proud of that feat and, I must confess, it IS impressive!)
Finally, they had to stop the scene because Sebastian was too red from keeping himself from laughing at what he was seeing *g*
The final part was with every one of the actors (minus Jared, who wasn’t there for Sunday) on stage, with bit rounds of applause for them, us, the convention organization and, of course, Julie.
My final participation in the convention was a spur of the moment photo OP with Rob. Me and my brother decided that we wanted a picture with someone and given that Jared and Jensen were obviously sold out, it was between Mark and Rob. We ended up with Rob.
Like I said before, he was really sweet, very cool about anything you asked for your picture and game for just about anything (we saw some really cool pictures being taken while we were waiting). Didn’t do anything special, just a plain arms over, hand around the waist kind of thing.
Once more, I embarrassed myself by getting too comfortable in these situations and ended up rubbing his back as we exchanged thanks *head desk* It wasn’t really proper and it was completely unconscious, just something I’m used to do, but he didn’t seemed to take it the wrong way -fortunately. Me, however, as soon as I realized what I had done, quickly made my exit *g*
On a more personal note, I was delighted to meet to online friends personally :))
jeeronie I met on Saturday, after two days of misplacing each other all over the convention *g* She was a little bit of home after being away for a whole week and a real sweetie to talk to.
amber1960 I was all but ready to give up on because after two and a half days of looking for her face in a crowd of over 300, I had given up hope of finding her.
We got lucky :))
And what an absolute darling. It was a pleasure to meet both of them and one of the highlights of the convention for me. And I even got some awesome printed photos that
amber1960 was sweet enough to offer me!
It was, of course, a wonderful first experience and honestly, I can’t think of a single moment that was less good or even bad. Sure, there were boring periods and my feet aren’t really talking to me after all that standing-in-line business, but the way I see it, most good things in life are 90% foreplay and 10% ecstasy. And this whole experience was exactly that.
I am going to try and post all the videos as soon as I can, but given how multimedia-retarded I am, it might hit a few SNAFUs on the way...
