Today was a day of books for us. The morning started with our usual trip to the library to return things that were due and to pick up a few new things that we wanted to read. It was also the day of the Friends of the Library's Second Saturday Book Sale. There are a lot of great deals on used books, movies, audio books... pretty much any medium carried by the library, they have something of it to sell. We found some really great things. Teddy picked up a few books and a Magic School Bus video. We found Uncle Wiggly and Mrs Brisby and the Rats of NIHM on audio. I found a Kay Hooper Bishop/Special Crimes Unit book. We came out with a little something for everyone.
We had a little time to waste before our afternoon activity, so we brought recycling up to drop off and stopped for lunch. I wanted to bring in one of my books to read, but I didn't want to interrupt family time.
Our afternoon activity was going to
Belmont's Family Literacy Day. We went last year and had a blast, so we definitely wanted a return visit this year. It was from 1 to 4 and we got there at 1:05. There were already about a dozen student groups set up with their reading circles and their piles of books for the kids to choose from. After each story that the kids listen to, they get a sticker on their sticker book. After 3 stickers, they are able to get a snack or play a game/do a craft. After 6, they get to pick out a new book to bring home.
The reading circles we went to were picked out by Teddy, except the few that we went to because of Peter's wandering. (We had him on
Bear, much to the delight of the students.) The first reading circle we went to was the Student Nurses Association, where they read Teddy a book about the body. I think they fell in love with him... but then again, I think all the girls did through out the whole park. He was as cute as usual. I don't remember all of the circles that we went to, but I know we did hit a Dr Seuss circle where they read him Green Eggs and Ham, a circle sponsored by the Sciences (maybe that was the same one?), one that read him a story about monsters, one that read him The Giving Tree and, the final one, a circle sponsored by Phi Mu (the only sorority at Florida Southern that I considered rushing). They read him Red Fish, Blue Fish. Pete sat through some of the stories, cuddled with Mommy or Daddy through some of them and wandered around a little through some of them. All in all, though, both boys were great.
After they finished their 6 stories, they each went to pick out a book. Or rather, Teddy picked out books for both of them. As much as Rich and I wanted him to get Battle of the Labyrinth, we knew better than to push. Teddy did find a Pokemon book that he hadn't gotten previously from Lindsay and he got a Blue's Clues book for Pete. I think both boys were really satisfied with their books.
From there, they played for awhile on the playground. Pete tried to do everything on the playset that Brother did. Some of it worked and some of it didn't. I do have pics. I just need to get them uploaded later. They have goody bags that they give out as door prizes. Teddy won one this year and was very cute going up to get the bag from the mascot. He thought that he pulled a prize out of the bag and was pleasantly surprised to find that he got the whole thing. No luck for Pete, but that was ok since Teddy's bag consisted of two shirts that were too big for him and too small for us as well a big plastic cup.
We did a little of the fun stuff - mainly used a big bubble wand and put their hand prints on a banner. Teddy's hand print was no big deal but Pete's... he doesn't like that so much. I ended up with a lot of washable paint on my shirt. Ah well, kids are about getting messy so I didn't mind. Teddy got some cotton candy and Pete got a cookie before leaving.
So it was a really great day. We came home and all napped and I've been reading a Kay Hooper. Then tonight, we'll have some new books to read to the boys before bed.
Tomorrow's going to be a day of cleaning, packing and sorting. But that's ok. Because today was a weekend full of fun by itself.
