Smile - LJ Idol Season 6, Topic 3

Nov 04, 2009 18:34

I walk through the darkness, grateful for the end of another work day. I reach the bench, it's brighter blue muted in the yellowed light of the overhead light. In the distance, lights appear through the trees. Rather than taking a seat, I stand on the curb waiting for the car to arrive. Quietly, the silver van pulls to a stop before me and my lips curve as I reach out to open the passenger side door.

The inside light reveals a sleeping figure in the back seat - my eldest son with his head lolled to the side, arms wrapped tightly around his pillow, Bodie. He had promised me kisses when they dropped me off that morning, but I didn't wake him to make him keep that promise. He needs his sleep, I know.

I slide into the cushioned bucket seat, placing my bag on the floor at my feet. My motion doesn't stop as I slip across the empty space to place my lips against my husband's. The light in our eyes and the smile on our faces match.

As I settle into my seat, pulling the seatbelt across my body, I turn my head to look behind my husband's seat. A flap of cloth from the car seat covers the top of a head I know to be covered with pale brown hair. A small thumb rests inside a round mouth. Big blue eyes look toward me, wide where his brother's hazel ones are closed. His hand travels down and, like the sun coming from behind a cloud, a smile emerges. His pudgy cheeks round and the tiny little tooth in his bottom gum becomes visible. Shyness overcomes him and, while the smile remains, his head turns inward. A larger smile crosses my own lips.

My day is complete.
