In considering the results of this year's election I have come to this conclusion.
The liberals have won. America as our forefather's built it, as many of our families fought and died for it, as my own late grandfather defended it in the greatest war, will die. There is no Reagan, there is no Conservative majority in this country, and there is no

1. Look at the numbers. This was no landslide. Last I saw, it was somewhere in the neighborhood of 52-48%. That means, essentially, the balance is precisely the same as it was the last two election cycles: evenly split down the middle. The difference can likely be explained as new voters (massive youth vote drives by Obama) and the lack of interest shown by the other side (folks like me and my wife who just stayed home, since neither option held any reason to leave the house, in our eyes). It's hard to say any ideal has 'won' when half of us are going to wake up annoyed tomorrow.
2. I've said it before, I'll say it again: look at Joe Biden. That is not the choice of an idealist looking to make radical changes to the system. That choices says 'I'm a party man who is going to play by the rules'. Essentially, Howard Dean, Pelosi and Reid are president as much as Obama is, they just don't get to pick the china for the White House.
3. Right now, neither party offers anything remotely resembling Ronaldus Magnus or any real leaders. I doubt they will in 4 years. (Obama gets a free ride for the first term because 'it's Bush's fault' will still work...but not into the second term.) I imagine we will live in a very different world come 2016 when a lot of those who voted for Obama seeking integrity and change see a legacy that's a blend of Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton. Having seen what -both- sides offer, what will they vote for then? Do you really think they won't go for an alternative? Ross Perot actually had a good shot at it after just four tepid years of Bush 41, and he was kind of a nutjob who was only in it to grind and axe with the Bush family. What happens when a similar choice rises that actually offers a change?
3. Congress. Approval ratings are sitting at a record low, 17%. What was the vote tonight? +12 total for the dems. That's it. Around 300 seats between the House and Senate, and a TWELVE SEAT NET CHANGE. So...everyone generally hates congress, but tonight they said 'bring 'em back for more!' Now...think about this. Why would that be? Because they had no alternatives. Unless the approval ratings are VERY wrong, a large number of people who disapprove of what their representatives are doing just voted them back into office. The -only- possible reason for this would be that the alternative was even worse. What's that tell you about how well the two party system is working? It just finally bled over into the presidential election.
Don't lose hope to this level. I was just outside, and the stars are still where they were last night, God is still on the throne, and everything's going to be okay. Eventually. It's just going to suck -really- hard for a few years.
