My grammom is amazing...
So today I skipped a class I didnt feel good. I met my grammom in center city and we went to the store and back to her house, and she cooked for me and we talked... we talked about important stuff, and I learned things about her I didnt know.
the most important thing I learned about her is she is the strongest woman I now know. I thought my mom was strong, but her mother is stronger. When I grow up I want to be just like my grandmother.
it was so amazing today to be able to talk to her without having other peoples words and opinions interfere. when ever the rest of my family is there they speak in spanish and Ive never been old enough or cared enough to have a meaningful conversation with her.
today was different and it was partly because of my english teacher who was talking about how we dont appreciate or see people and who they really are until they pass. I just saw my grandmother in a different light.
She was born in Puerto Rico in her mid twentiesshe moved to the states. She learned english by watching TV game shows during the day. learning words and how to spell. she knows how to do math better than I do. She has epilepsy and she has over come all sickness she has ever had. even tumors in her colon.
she loved her family so much that she stayed with an abusive alcoholic for 30 years. for 30 years she was a slave. she cooked and on her hands and knees she cleaned floors. she raised 6 children with 2 miscarriages. for 30 years she endured pain and agony and yet she remained faithful to God.
when she was a little girl she was raised by her grandparents on a farm. she has only been edjucated to the 6th grade. she was raised to use her resources wisely and make everything last until the very end. she still lives like that.
more than that shes raised 6 ungrateful children who dislike eachother and her. and stayed in that abuse relationship because without it her kids wouldve been given up for adoption (because she couldnt work because of her epilepsy). after a long time of sticking close together its a rare rare thing for them to be together. one uncle didnt come to my moms wedding because he owed another one money and they used my grandmother as a pawn in their game to make the first uncle pay them back.
You know why I love her the most? because of her strength. it runs in our blood. Its my Puerto Rican pride. My grammom has endure through all things and even at the age of 68 still has a dream to become a lawyer. she still has such a passion to learn. she loves people, and her family more importantly. she gets just six hundered and fifty dollars a month and yet she survives. shes lonley but she survives.
I plan to try my hardest to help her get some more education. she said she couldnt go to school because her english is at a forth grade level. but I know she can do it.
she gave me her heart and she gave my sister her mind. and she gave us both strength to do anything God has for us.
my 68 year old, 6th grade educated grammom is the greatest woman I know.
