It appears Chester has some health issues at the moment. Brought him to the vet last night and didn't really walk away with answers.
Respiratory Symptoms:
- when he plays fairly hard for a short while, he will outright pant.
- sometimes when he's at rest he breaths loudly.. not panting, just like heavy nose breathing.
- he sneezes a fair bit, and he has since I brought him home back in November.
Eye Symptoms:
- a week ago the right eye was cloudy, with the third eyelid up.
- during that time, he was also a bit less playful, and hid under my bed a bit more than I recall him doing
- he would jerk his head back when something came close to his face... like a drunk person
I called the e-vet and seeing as he was not exposed to toxic plants or items and was otherwise fine (eating, drinking, playing, etc) they said to bring him in to the normal vet the following day if it persists. He was much better the next day, so I did nothing.
Then on Wednesday, I noticed:
- left (other) eye was cloudy with third eyelid up a bit. Eyelid would go down when "excited" about something.
- did the head jerking motion a bit.
- otherwise acting fine.
I decided if he was still showing eye issues Thursday morning, I would bring him to the vet. And while there I would also discuss the breathing issues (which weren't of major concern to me). So I brought him in last night to a vet near my house that's open until 9 pm. They've never seen Chester before, and I've only been thee once with Lincoln.
They did the florescent eye test on him, poked his eye with a q-tip and checked his vitals. EVERYTHING IS FINE. No trauma to the eye. The vet agreed that the eye was cloudy, so there was definitely something wrong.
Chester actually bit the vet when he was trying to clean off Chester's face of the yellow goop. Ooops. But come on, you just poked and prodded him so can you really blame him??
I was sent home with some eye drops. If those don't help within 10 days, he will be referred to an eye specialist. As for the breathing, the vet said Chester seemed normal while there, but to watch him as breathing can be of major concern. If it persists we can X-ray, and/or take a blood panel. In the meantime, he asked me to add Lysine supplements to his food. Lysine is good for the immune system, respiratory issues and apparently eyes.
He also suggested I switch his litter to a dust free brand, which I may do in the one litter box that he doesn't use as much. Just have to research some options.
So far, Chester has receive two does of Lysine and three rounds of eyedrops. Only time will tell if it gets better.
His Eye:
I just reduced his food intake as well as I think he's done his major growing and is a bit chunky now. He now eats the 1 lb raw food brick in 4 days instead of 3. Cheaper for me!
AND I installed a kitty door to my bedroom for him to come in/out without me having to keep the door open.
Speaking of Chester, my painting is done and on its way!
