Notes: Based on Secret Invasion and Ed Brubaker CA canon.

I am sorry.

For all that you would have been inconvenient, for all that your petty war served our purpose, you did not deserve to die that way. Paraded in the streets, mocked, shot down like a dog.

I am sorry, but your people are barbarians.

I’m told that roses are an appropriate gift for the dead, and indeed, when I came here, their blossoms and petals are strewn across the steps where you died. Letters are included. “We’re sorry.” “I’m sorry.” “We love you.”

Someone wrote: “You were right.”

I fail to understand how that was allowed, considering. But perhaps there is some room for leniency now that you are dead, and the back of your resistance broken.

Gently, I placed my bundle of ferns and roses on the steps. I cannot write a letter, though this seems to be the custom. But I can certainly pray.

It is necessary. You must see that, now that you are in His hands. It was necessary, though we take no pleasure in its casualties, though it is fortunate you are not here. Being the man you were, you would find no pleasure in seeing old friends broken, even if they were the ones who betrayed. We must see the new king brought low, his followers scattered and divided, and your own grimly fighting a war they cannot win. The new world we bring would break your heart. Go to the Deity, Captain, may you find your peace.

He loves you too. He won’t let you go unavenged.
