He’s never condescended to them. Never. Not when they were little kids who should have grown up believing in Santa and the tooth fairy; and couldn’t understand why Mrs. Keller wouldn’t let Megan read their copies of Harry Potter or His Dark Materials. Not when Carol decided she didn’t want to go to Georgetown; or when Jane insisted on paying for her own place, out of her own pocket even if (in their Dad’s appalled view) that meant a tiny little flat that didn’t look much better than a warehouse.
They always knew of his unwavering, unshakable faith in them, the respect which Megan’s mother sometimes had trouble giving. Its greatest testament lies in the untouched manuscript he’s carefully left on the kitchen table, their easy chatter up till the moment when they have to leave home, back to the lives they’ve carved for themselves.
