It's all good: I made the entry private because it really is such a sticky issue. I don't want to end up fighting with people when I have no intention of fighting (especially when I should be writing my thesis!) I'm sorry about that

I agree that Clark was justified in real-world terms - I agree with everything you said. But there's something that doesn't sit well with me in Clark killing within the DCU, because he's such a paragon of morality, and also because there's enough fantasy in that universe where there's always another way. Maybe I trust Clark too much, maybe I've been watching too much Justice League, but that's my instinct. *shrug*
I don't think killing would necessarily compromise Clark, because the way he treats it, it's always, ALWAYS the last resort, and it's a horrible failing if it's considered as anything else. He's never done it except as a last resort.
What's a far worse compromise, to me, is his apparent inconsistency in this application to others. Regardless of how he felt about Diana's choice to kill Max Lord in IC, I don't think it was right for him to not speak out on her behalf, to explain why she did it, especially since she killed Max Lord to save him and his loved ones. And I'm flabbergasted that in contrast, he was apparently so quick to forgive Emil Hamilton, a man who tortured and butchered an alien family, two human teenagers, all to get Clark and the people he cared for.
But then, I tell myself IC isn't canon and pod people were walking around at the time.
