So I was thinking about it, and everyone thinks they know who the ebst is at every position. It is subjective, sure, but I figured I would try my hand at it and see what I personally would come up with. I am certain people will argue my picks, but again, they are my picks.
1B Lou Gehrig - The Iron Horse is a no brainer. Sure, he was a Yankee, but you name a better first baseman. You cannot do it. Gehrig was a disciplined hitter who had power, plus he fielded the position. He may be the only man who good honestly give Babe Ruth a run for his money (and in 1927, he did).
2B Joe Morgan - lots of different options here, but I ultimately settled with Joe here. A lot of people would probably go with Rogers Hornsby, but I just can't do it. I have seen so many film reels with Morgan hitting and fielding when I thought for sure he was toast.
3B Wade Boggs - always a professional, Boggs was my lock in here. Only Cal Ripken was even in consideration here, but he just was not good enough to beat out Boggs.
SS Derek Jeter - He is a lock for first ballot into the HOF. He is one of the best to play his position ever, and it helps that he is my all time favorite player.
C Johnny Bench - He played for a rival team, but Bench was remarkable. I really could not in fairness go with anyone else.
RF Babe Ruth - Simply the greatest player ever. I do not care what anyone says, Babe is the HR king. It took Aaron nearly 2500 more at bats in smaller stadiums to do what Ruth did. Plus, he could do it at will. If he played in the game today, he would average 60 HR's a season. That is a feat reserved for the gods.
CF Ty Cobb - You may hate him, but you knew he came to play. I love Cobb. He was a racist SOB, but he knew how to play the game of baseball, and few did it better.
LF Ted Williams/Rickey Henderson - This is my only tie. Do I take one of the greatest hitters of all time, or do I take the best baserunner of all time? I call it a push.
SP Nolan Ryan - I suppose you could go with a lot of other pitchers, but frankly, I do not see how you beat out the Ryan Express. I actually saw him pitch live, which makes this a personal favorite pick.
RP Mariano Rivera - Simply the greatest closer to ever play the game. Hoffman may have a few more saves, but Rivera has a few more rings, and a lot more postseason experience. Nobody closes a game like the Sandman.
