All right,
misirlou. Thou hast thrown down the gauntlet and, verily, I shall answer thy query. BEHOLD!!!
1) System of a Down - Question!: The question is this... How does a "mainstream" metal band go about creating a song that is poignantly philosophical without coming across as heavy-handed, preachy, or simply pedantic? The answer: this freakin' song. Ghosts are no different than you.
2) The Beatles - I've Got a Feeling: Possibly the last true Lennon/McCartney songwriting collaboration, this "Let it Be" track is a blend of two seperate songs by the respective Liverpudlians that, when put together, mesh into a perfect slice of 70's-style bare-bones rock. The fact that the song actually predated the 70's by over a year (by this I refer to writing and recording, not release) only reinforces The Beatles' uncanny talent for predicting, if not directly controlling, the direction of popular music. I wouldn't be able to make a list such as this without at least one Beatles track.
3) Cake - End of the Movie: It's only one minute forty-nine seconds long, but that's all John McCrea needs to tunefully remind us how life is a steaming pile of shit, yet most of us wanna see how it all turns out. The only thing that could make this song better is a fiddle. Or maybe a cowbell. There aren't very many songs that couldn't be improved by judicious cowbell use.
4) Tiger Army - Trance: Nick 13 and the boys take psychobilly on a day trip down to Nawlins for this little meditation on the power of voodoo. This is actually one of several excellent tracks on the band's self-titled debut, but it's the only one which mentions a "coffin Cadillac", which combines with driving dixie-jazz drums and roughneck guitar sound to make it a potent standout. Also, in case you were wondering, the rumors are true...
TIGER ARMY NEVER DIE!!!
5) Mr. Bungle - None of Them Knew They Were Robots: Remember Mike Patton? From Faith No More? Well, it turns out he's had a much better, much less sane band waiting in the wings all along. And they've brought LSD and crossbows for everyone! Seriously, trying to make sense of the lyrics, stylistic shifts and sonic textures of this song requires at least seven shots of whiskey, a strong cup of coffee, and three years in a rubber room. Better to just sit back and enjoy the ride.
6) Flogging Molly - Cruel Mistress: If you don't like Flogging Molly, then you just don't enjoy fun things. If you don't like Flogging Molly putting their own distinctive mark on the time-honored musical staple known as the sea shanty, well then...you suck and I no longer wish for you to continue breathing.
Many moons to the day
That I threw her love away
Now every whale spouts "go to hell"
As the wind laughs in my face
I've grown harder on the eyes
And salty to the taste
My pride has gone with the wake
As I wait a cold wet grave
I rose to the smell
Of a wet desert hell
And I thought to myself
How'd I wind up in this jail
Till a voice called to me
From deep within the sea
Dry your eyes my dear fisherman
Your ass belongs to me
The sea is a cruel mistress
The sea is a cruel mistress
The earth will rest my bones
Lord I know, lord I know
But I'll see you when I get home
From the cold, yeah from the cold
Done.
