The Serious Part
Friday morning, Prof. Randy Pausch died after a long -- much longer than expected -- battle with pancreatic cancer.
A number of people have asked me over the last few months if I knew Prof. Paush, going to CMU and all. Nope. He was over in computer science, somewhere I certainly never went in this last year. I'm kind of embarrassed to admit I haven't even read his The Last Lecture yet. I really ought to; it very nearly inspired my mom to come to Pittsburgh to take classes at CMU, and may very well have inspired her to start pursuing an MFA.
I didn't know him or his family, but -- I feel for his kids. He went to great lengths to make sure that they would have as many good memories of him as possible, and tried to impart a lifetime of fatherly wisdom to them in a short time, before they'd be ready for all of it.
I don't talk about this often, but it's worth mentioning every now and again, as I friend new people: my mother was diagnosed with leukemia when I was nine (eight?), and my family lived in Seattle for a year while she got chemo and a bone marrow transplant. More than ten years out, she's more or less in remission and doing very, very well.
But it makes things like this hit a little more personally than they might. So I mourn the passing of Randy Pausch; may his sons know how much he did for them.
The Work Part
omfg. The kids of the Mamet casts pulled it off. Granted, we have one more show, and granted, about a third of the lines get paraphrased or said by someone else onstage, but holy crap. They've pulled it off.
Twelfth Night is, predictably, fun and full of talent, although I regret to say I've reached a point where I no longer really watch the show except to call cues off the actors' movements. Well, tomorrow is closing day -- I shall have to watch both shows carefully for pranks.
Blargh. When work finishes on Monday, I have to start packing. Blaaaaaargh.
