Just finished The Secret Garden!
Thoughts:
1) Martha is awesome.
2) Dickon is similarly awesome.
3) Nita in my head got all beamy when they started talking about how Magic makes things grow and how everything is made of Magic and when Susan Sowerby was talking about the Big Good Thing, because yes. That fits with YW worldview ridiculously well. Also, Nita gardens, and I really need to do more with that one of these days.
4) Ben Weatherstaff is kind of awesome, too.
5) There are some distinct differences betwee the book and the movie. One change the movie made that I am not so fond of is changing the manner of the Lennox's death from cholera to earthquake + RAMPAGING ELEPHANT. The pathos of a cholera epidemic is a lot stronger than the pathos of a RAMPAGING ELEPHANT, you know?
But the movie add several scenes that I quite like: Like Mary's heartbreaking dream about being lost in the garden, or the equally heartbreaking moment at the end when she runs from the Garden and is comforted by her uncle. The book starts with Mary as the main character and ends with Colin as the main character; the movie stays with Mary the whole way through, which I like better. Colin and Mary follow the same character arc, but in the end, Colin has a father and Mary doesn't. The movie addresses that little loose end in a really lovely way.
Now. I have a hazelnut latte and twenty minutes before BFF shows up. Let's go for another 500 words.
