Pimping! Pimping! This fic is a must-read. It's called Sawdust and Ashes.
The characters are spot-on and the story is heartwrenching but intensely real. The story takes place in early to mid second season. It deals with Jess, and Liz, and their past, but also Luke and Lorelai, and their present, and Rory, and it's not a 'shipper fic but it touches on Luke's feelings for Lorelai and the budding complicated relationship between Jess and Rory. Mostly, though, it's just about the past and nightmares that are and were real. I really cannot say enough good things about this. Go, run, read, and heap praise on the author because she deserves it.
And you know this is good because I don't recommend everything I read. I think the last story I recommended so highly was Truths Universally Acknowledged, which I still hope will reach more people because it, too, is amazing. I wish I had more words than just "amazing" and "incredible" for these two stories.
