I used to watch the show Cybill back when it was on TV for real, and I liked it then. Then it ended, I didn't think much of it, and I discovered Cybill Shepherd's previous show and forgot the sitcom existed.
But lately
, maybe because Christine Baranski is in Mamma Mia! (and also Chicago though that was years ago), I decided it was time to refresh my memory. I hadn't even remembered CB's character's name. I remembered Cybill, of course, but not her last name. I remembered CB had an ex that she liked to stalk called Dr. Dick. I remembered Zoey and I remembered liking Alicia Witt. That was about it. I had even forgotten Cybill had another daughter. So I looked into DVDs. In the US, there was a "Collector's Edition" or something released, two discs, with a handful of episodes. That was it. However, in the UK, all four complete seasons (series) were released.
I became clever and downloaded all four seasons. I've been watching them for about two weeks now. The show is funnier than I remember. There's not a whole that dates it - just a line or two here or there. (A state-of-the-art computer with a three-gig hard drive and 200 megs of RAM.) Everyone is just fantastic and hilarious.
There was an episode that I was watching recently where Cybill (Sheridan) got this new TV show (yeah, she's an actress - I'd forgotten that, too) where she and a partner something with aliens but it's funny and there's romantic tension. There was an XF reference when it was first introduced and then it was dropped. So she's doing the scene with her partner and they start arguing. And talking over each other. And it sparks some sort of "Methins there was something familiar about that" reaction in me. And seriously, remember what I said about being clever? Yeah, that's gone at this point. Because I can't figure out what this reminds me of. Why does Cybill arguing with a guy sound so familiar... I don't know...
Around the time I figure it out (which, really, should have been immediately), I start getting into it and laughing more at the homage than at what's actually going on (which I think was the point). And at one point, Cybill's character says to her partner "Don't call me Blondie-Blonde!" I laughed so hard. Oh, David.
I think when I finish this show, it'll be time to go back and rewatch ML again.
