Milo is so right. I was just telling someone this the other day: I would get bored if it was nothing but "let's meet even more new people and watch them freak out as they adjust to their abilities!" But there was a very human level of emotional connection in the first season that seemed to really be lacking this year. I didn't really feel a bond with any of the new characters, and worse, I had a very hard time maintaining the ones I'd developed last year. It kind of worries me because I get the sense that the showrunners might be about to respond to fan unhappiness by trying to go bigger and badder, when I have a growing feeling that what fans want is smaller and more personal.
I think that's why Monica was my favorite new character, even though she had the most "boring" storyline overall. Watching her try to pound ethics into the boys' heads was a lot like watching Peter in the first few episodes last season, especially putting up with Nathan's crap lie about his "suicide attempt" to aid his political motivations. I miss that feeling that, yeah, these people might be called on to "save the world", but their everyday real life and its problems doesn't just stop.
