Blood pressure

I am overweight. No, wait, I'm fat.

I went to the doctor today for a routine checkup, which of course included my weight and blood pressure. The nurse weighed me first, and then, knowing my weight, took my blood pressure. She pumped the cuff up to 160 or 180, and started sloooowwwllly letting the air out. Then she started letting the air out more quickly. Finally she announced, in a completely surprised voice, "120 over 58. That's good!"

Damn right that's good. Almost every doctor and nurse assumes that at my weight I must have high blood pressure. The recumbent biking this past summer, plus going to the gym now that it's too cold out, has lowered my blood pressure a bit below what it used to be, but it was never very high. When I was younger it was low enough to make me dizzy if I stood up too fast.

Fit is not the opposite of fat. You can be fat and fit, or skinny and unfit.
